If the line is nonexistent, what am I gonna vote for?
When it's something this ambiguous, everything is subjective. You vote based on what you believe is right. My point is that it's pretty much impossible to objectively define everything as mainstream or not mainstream, although it's possible for some to come to a consensus like the big three shounen titles.

I chose non-mainstream, but only because I'm not that into Shounen and that's the most popular genre. I've completely avoided the most popular series: Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece.
But it's hard to say what's mainstream and what's not, since most series have to achieve a certain level of popularity in order for people to think about scanlating it.

Doesn't it just depend on the plot? But I guess mainstream mangas get to be checked first when someone's looking for a manga. Though personally, I don't care as long as the story's good.
Voted for liking both equally.

As to anime, I would say I don't care. I don't even know whether some series is mainstream enough since I don't look for statistics. Of course I don't watch any long-running shounen anime at all. Those are non-arguably "mainstream".
As to manga, I guess prefer the non-mainstream. I see those most popular manga often have thousands of people (or even tens of thoudsands) having them on their lists. The majority of the manga I like do not have that many people listing them.
As to the most popular shounen and shoujo series, I never like them and don't think I ever watch their anime (maybe finished a couple of such non-long running series but the majority just don't interest me).

Just hold it simple, all long running series (their are exceptions).

Exactly, I don't read much shounen and we all know most shounen series are mainstream than any other genre. However, I don't care whether a series is mainstream or not, once it has a great plot (and occasionally great art) then I would give it a shot.

Honestly I'd argue with English readers that Shoujo is by far more popular than Shounen.
Well, I read both, but I like non-mainstream better.

Not all shounen series are popular (or even most). Like KaoriNite said, series that gets scanlated tend to enjoy at least some popularity, and there's no doubt that there are lots of series out there that can't even remotely be called mainstream. Although I have to admit that series that are popular in Japan aren't necessarily popular here. Fanservice sells reaaaaally well there.

i don't really care as long as the story is good. however, it never even occur to me something is mainstream or non-mainstream, i never based by reading habit on it. i dont know their status, and i always assume since i read it, a lot of people must have read it because i'm just a simple person with simple preference.

If Non-mainstream series are more popular than mainstream ones then they are not non-mainstream at all, lol.
I went for the don't care, i don't usually read a manga thinking who else does.

+1. though I did use the series stats list a few times when I was short on time, and didn't want to spend forever combing through descriptions and scan status after a tag/genre search. Unfortunate truth that while some "non-mainstream" are better than the most popular manga, a lot are rated low because they simply suck xP.

I'd like to say both and maybe I'm just biased or plain stupid, but I haven't read any mainstream series recently that have satisfied me as much as the recent non-mainstream manga, except for Eureka Seven if that's even mainstream
