He ran away to avoid being Guild Master near the beginning of the time skip after Makarov named him the new guild master and showed him that secret magic the one Iwan was going on about (can't remember its name right now. He named Makarov the Guild Master again that is why Makarov is technically both the 3rd and 6th Guild Master

He's so wildly irresponsible, if he wasn't really going to take care of Kana, a whole guild is out the question. At least he stayed true to character, it might take some time for to grow out of that.
