There was this anime movie that was released recently, I think in 2012 itself. It's name had two words, and it was quite reminiscent of Ghost in the Shell. Accordingly, it was futuristic, with a female android lead, who I think was a detective, and it was quite dark. Any ideas?

No, this was a standalone movie.

Could you be thinking of the Armitage III movies? They're older than 2012, but they did just get a rerelease for the first time in awhile. They're the only recent anime films I can think of with a female android cop.

No, I'm quite sure it was a standalone. Also, the main character had this make-up, which was like a thick line from one ear to the ear, over the eyes. Something like what the fashion models have, but I never could comprehend. I think.
There was a murder and some investigation involved, too. And the animation style was reminiscent of Innocence and Apple Seed.

With movie are you referring to a "movie" (so you're sure that it has being scheduled on cinemas) or also to an OVA (home video).
Because, if you're positive it's a "movie" there are only 36 movies on anidb for 2012 (already aired). It's not gonna be a massive job to check them out, since most of them are clearly not what you asked:
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?type.web=1&type.unknow n=1&type.tvspecial=1&type.tvseries=1&type.ova= 1&type.other=1&type.musicvideo=1&type.movie=1 &type=4&show=animelist&orderby.name=0.1& noalias=1&eps=1&enddate0=2012-?-?&do.update= update&aired=on&airdate0=2012-?-?
You can also widen the years range and try to add some specifics (I tried with setting -> future and with sci-fi) but I can't find anything relevant in the last 3 years. :/
For my little contribution, the closest I could get is Un-Go: Inga-ron, but it can't clearly be it unless you remembered wrongly something.
