I attribute the faults you find to the author's lack of experience in writing weekly web-comics. If you remember reading the first series, you'll probably of found fewer complaints for similar things because there were longer chapters, or if you're like me and read it volume by volume then you could speed up or slow down your own reading pace as needed..
Whereas now as it's being released in short 10-18 page chapters (generally closer to 14-16) it's more difficult to fit everything in that he wants.
Also, we get a flashback either because he's going to be good, or because the world isn't so black and white where everyone is just good or bad, everyone has their motivations. If you just want good to beat up evil, then you need to find something to read aimed at younger audiences, because even Shounen doesn't follow that most of the time now.
