im starting to wonder if this is still on hiatus or if its been axed or if the author (Pro Shiki) is still alive even o.o,
if anybody could find out that would be great, since this was just starting to get into the story when it went on hiatus

The artist is the one ill and she posted on her blog the first of the year.
Quote
The artist wrote on her blog congratulating everyone on the new year.
She affirms that the duo is still committed to Iris Zero, but she has not yet fully recovered and is not ready for it. There is no time estimate for the series' return, but she appreciates everyone for waiting patiently.

Hi,
I'm not sure if i should be saying this, but oh well. if u check the author or artist's other work, it says the last chapter was updated 10 days ago. I'm not sure if this is correct, because according to people, the author is still sick. But its kind of weird when the other is updated, u know.
By the way, here is the other work that the author is working on:

I think the translator is just catching up with the currently released chapters.

I'm curious as to what kind of illness she has that's lasted over a year? I've noticed that when ever a mangaka goes on hiatus "due to an illness" it usually last far longer than you'd normally expect an illness to last.
Obviously, broken bones are something completely different, but still, it would only take a couple months to heal and then a couple more for rehab, wouldn't it?

First of all, it's not the author but the illustrator, HOTARU Takana, who's ill. The author doesn't seem to have any intention of abandoning his story (cf. Pro Shiki).
Super Flik, I think you're forgetting that being on hiatus due to an illness doesn't necessarily mean the illustrator can control progress of her recovery. It might have taken some time to find the right diagnosis for her, even if they knew that she was ill. More often than not, you won't get the right therapy on the spot. And lots of complications may still cause treatment to be delayed or dragged after the doctors have determined how they will proceed.
That aside, a great number of diseases actually do prevent you from working for a longer period of time: cancer, metabolic disorders like diabetes, autoimmune diseases, psychologic issues (e.g. burn-out, depression etc.). The latter need particularly long to be treated as the patients' condition must be stabilized first before you can start treating them. And the prospect of recovery is not given in all cases.
Having said that, let's just hope for HOTARU Takana-sensei that all these mishaps don't apply to her sick leave and that she will soon recover to continue Iris Zero.

thanks for the replies. and for correcting me that its the artist not the author thats ill, i just hope they don't have an infection after surgery like i did when i crashed my dirt bike, took me 2 1/2 yrs to fully recover due to the infection where the Tibia broke through the skin and even now (3yrs after it fully healed) i can't walk more than 10 km without having to sit and rest due to pain
edit: @superman89 - i went to the blog you linked and since i cant read japanese (unless its been english letter'd) i had to use google chrome's translate feature and it came out like this:

I think therefore, time and whether it takes a while yet to resume probably. You would have kept you waiting a Readers is no pilfering so, but because it'll bring up series resumes always time it takes much, if, at the back of one's mind that the iris zero, Please keep doing leave it alone over just a bit. Laid-back, and enjoy it leisurely waiting, I am very happy. Oh yeah, even after hiatuses, person who gave me a message on Twitter or web applause people, thank you! In spite of the fact that the long hiatuses, and it is really saved to your words of support and encouragement. What is the presence of the reader's, but I was amazing. In spite of the fact that the inconvenience a lot, can be to say "how much it takes, waiting forever", and I was glad really. It was almost crying too happy. In addition to encouraging when you will be able to get work with you, and I'll do my best treatment. The write-once, about the character of Iris Zero, little small story? It is dropping.

Where did you get the information from? It would be great if they picked it up so soon. I miss the regular releases.
