In many shoujo manga there is a theme at the beginning that the main female has never dated before despite being sixteen. Other girls and boys around her bully her because of this and it and she thinks of it as something to be ashamed of or worried about.
I'm seventeen, and have never dated before. My older sister was nineteen when she first dated someone and many of my friends are the same, and no one has indicated that this is something bad, and it isn't something someone gets bullied for.
I live in Australia, is it the same in other countries, is it really like that in Japan and do you know anyone who has ever been bullied because of your lack of boyfriend.

I can't say if it's the same for everyone in America, this is from my own personal experience. I didn't date/have a boyfriend before I was sixteen and, when I told people that (even some of my friends) gave me looks and said that was weird.

Actually i was surprised by this too. In many manga they make a total fuss about not having a boyfriend. I don't understand... It's not like your life depends on something so stupid. (Not that it's not nice to have someone )
On the other hand i heard that not being married with 30 is shameful for a woman too. So i'm not sure if japanese are really like this or if it's just to make a story Öö
If i remember correctly in some manga they're already dating in middle school and even do other things. I know people who did such things in the same age, but nobody would bully someone for not doing. Hm, so i wonder too... Does anyone know how it really is?

I'm 17, too and I've never really dated someone before, but no one bullies me because of it.
Some of guys even told me they like when the girl they date/like is inexperienced, so they can be their the First in whatsoever.
I really hope this isn't reality in Japan.

I never pay attention to/care about this because we all know that shoujo manga are not to be taken seriously. XD

Eh, I wonder myself. But yes, this is a manga, so it shouldn't be taken seriously. Hopefully though that's not real there though, that would be messed up o.o
To the OP: oh, I live in Australia to

This is true; it is, after all, fiction. However, dating, or getting married, or whatever, is something that the majority of teenager girls think about regularly, even if they aren't pro-active about it.I think shoujo is just a reflection of thoughts rather than reality.
Though I should hope most of us aren't as dumb as those female leads lol. ^^
