Both. But at the beginning, it'll be used for labor.

I actually think 'neither' if we are talking strictly about androids, i.e. robots made to look like humans.

Keeping the robot human-like would only limit its functionality in industry or warfare.

What purpose would a human appearance serve on the battlefield?
Why bother giving each of them a human face if you expect it to be blown off?

Industry robots are already in use today and they look nothing like humans nor are they intended to.

Call me a pervert, but I wouldn't be surprised if the first commercially produced android was a sex toy.

Android?
It's currently used by Google to spy on people via mobile phones and tablets.

Hookers, basically.

I'd be surprised.
I expect Gynoids made for sex to be produced before their male counterpart bigrazz

I'm gonna have to say labor. Only a cynic would say war.
I mean, we're talking about a scenario where you wont have to do manual labor here! Who doesn't want that?!

unless you count things like Drones androids they would never be used for war.

too many joints and needless parts. too fragile.

for the same resource cost you could make a much better mechanical warrior.

Maybe. Most of them have poor balance and too many joints.
But some of them are ... sort of possible.
still a tracked vehicle is generally advantageous. unless the terrain absolutely prohibits it.
its just easier to get better armor.

None of the above. Androids are extremely an extremely inefficient design to do highly specific tasks. Making a robot that looks and "acts" human would be purely for novelty, and/or "servant" functionality, depending on how advanced it is.

I mean, think about it, the only point of having a humanoid robot would be for humans to relate to it. You don't need to relate to the machinery building your cars, and you don't need to relate to the machine firing a thousand rounds a minute into your body.

Not unless the world/country adapts a system where you can OWN a bot that works FOR you (if we're strictly talking manual labor) and get paid for it.
It'll be like a long-term investment sort of thing laugh

Way to take a hypothetical question too seriously, dude.

an android would be neither of those, unless you want something to retrofit a human task... but it would be cheaper to just completely abandon whatever it is at that point

in industry they have no purpose because the human form would limit them.

depending on how intelligent they are they could completely replace humans in the service industry.

if they are human like, and actually think, probably make for a decent companion.

realisticly, we will never allow ai to become human like in a real sense, so all i really see them being able to do is a house keeper and sex doll.

yeah, i can see it being used for labor at first, making the public warm up to the idea and then its world domination next! and then they will make humans their slaves! goddamnit.. we have to stop this! it will be the world before Lincoln again.. except with androids and laser guns, that would be pretty cool lol.
