I just finished the first volume, and... I think I like it. I'm not worried about it failing to tie up the lose ends from Negima--it is clearly going to be more of a sequel than a spin-off--and I have faith that Akamtsu will deliver an interesting, surprising story like always.
What worries me is that it is very different than anything else he has done, stylistically. Akamatsu's strength as a writer came from his dedication to characterization, which he accomplished through doalog-rich chapters. If you look at any page from Negima or Love Him a, you'll see a lot of text on every page--many times more than is common for manga. The dialog in UQ Holder has, thus far, been much more conventional -- therefore very sparse by Akamatsu's standards.

I've always thought of it as a Sequel and peoples reasoning to why its not and that it is a "spin-off" are always lacking or downright faulty.
Anyways, this series is pretty bittersweet for me, as in it seems most of the characters that we loved from the first series are long dead and gone....

From what I read UQ Holder is sort of a sequel but then again not really a sequel as it has no real connection to the original Negima series except that he is Negi's grandson and Evangeline from Negima is his caretaker. As far as I read none of the other original cast make a reappearance in UQ Holder as almost all of the cast became immortal or semi immoratal by the end of Negima. Another contradiction is his last name is Konoe. If I remember correctly she married her friend who is also a girl. So his father is either adopted or something else.
