mm well it depends cuz all is relative XD what i mean is that even if the art is crappy u can see what the mangaka wants to show the readers and probably manga without art is just a book but art without plot are just a simple compilation of nice pics.
the manga in other words is a book that doesnt requires u to image the characters doing an action or having a dialog so ill pick plot over art X)

This also applies to me in both shoujo and shonen. Plot is always first for me. Art is secondary.
For example, "Skip Beat!" The art needs some time to get use to, but the story itself is very good. I've read manga that had very nice art but very weak plots/bad character progression. Then, there are manga where the mangaka starts off with weak looking drawings but the art improves as time goes by. Usually, the story is good for those too, but not all the time.
Even for the cutest looking shoujo story, I'll not read it unless the plot is very interesting and worth a read. Also, I have found manga with the sub-par art direction, but still ended up with an anime that looked better than their manga counterparts. And to be honest, even the anime story direction is more fleshed out than their manga counterparts sometimes. >_>

Sounds just like Ouran . Bad art (for a shoujo) but amazing story and anime . And a lot more but I've got a big lapsus now

^ really? I quite like ouran's art
Ouran's art is not "bad"
It's those eyes. But besides that, the anatomy is done quite well and it includes lots of detail. I don't think it's right to call Ouran's art "bad". Because it's not. "Not to your taste" is completely different.

Not bad.. But not that good either.
Although it gets better in the later volumes..
It's one of the only series which I read even though I don't like the art..
The anime was really good.. funny to tears and the art seemed really really good..

While I have read series with better artwork, I still like Ouran's early art. But perhaps I'm just being biased because it was an early series I read. ^^;

For the most part, when it come down to it, I favor art in comparison to plot. (That is, unless the plot is reaaalllly good.)

What makes you so sure? Just because someone says that they think a good plot is more important than art doesn't mean that the art isn't important to him or her. Also how do you know that some people here don't read more books than manga?

He just presumes, and I think hes right, more than 80% of us here read more manga than books (I can swear that its so) and if you dont like the art, if its shitty its more likely that you will stop reading it on the other side, if it has superb art but a stupid story I think people would still continue reading

I would say that plot is more important to me. Art DOES matter though. For example, if the art sucks and the storyline is good I'll probably stop reading because there's nothing to keep me there. At first I HATED Ouran's art, but the plot and writing was just so great the art grew on me and I love it now. I'm more of a fan of a more simplistic art that has detail only in the important places, but some mangaka balance it perfect. Ex. Alto But yeah they are both important to me. The art draws me in and the story keeps me mesmerized.

I balance between both books and manga, but I don't read more than the other.
Also, if the book had pretty good art but a stupid story, I would definitely stop reading it. I had no choice but to go through the first volume of "Pixie Pop", because I bought it out of whim. And that had cute looking art, but a not so good story. A lot of the early 90s shoujo manga were drawn pretty simple, but they had good stories of their own. . ^_^ It all depends on the person's preference.

I'll be honest, I've given up on manga with good art before. As an example, I'll throw out "The Bride of the Water God". And as an example of a comic I read regularly with terrible art, see "Cyanide and Happiness" on Explosm.com.
