...although I have talked a bit with one, when I was at an event, where a mangaka visited (and gave an interview), for a day, as a kinda side-event. ^_^
I don't really count that, as I didn't really try to contact her. I just got lucky, in having it occur.

Never tried (i only wrote to online columnists) but i really should have gone to the once in a lifetime MorrisonCon. I hope that he will change his mind and do a 2nd one...

@lambchopsil Christopher Lee re-reads Lord of the Rings once a year, so people who re-read long epics 20+ times do exist. One would only need to ripen to a certain age or laser focus all literary internist into a few single works. I choose the former. (Do this poll again after i turn 50.)

Forgot: I have actually met multiple book authors due to my job but i contacted none of them myself, so a technically does me in this time.

I contacted authors of Noblesse years ago on a post and I actually got a reply in the comments mainly because my message was in English while others were in korean.

I actually regularly talk with some of my fave BL mangaka. I really enjoy letting them know that they have a fan in Canada as they are always so happy to find out that people are reading their works outside of Japan. I also take photos of the manga I buy and send it to them. I contact them through twitter and it makes things easier and faster(?) than writing a letter nowadays. It also gives me opportunity for to talk to them about regular everyday things as well. It always makes my day when they write to me back! I converse with them in Japanese so it makes things easier on them and also allows them to write way more and outside the limitations that writing in English might give them.

I've tried a couple of times via twitter with different artists. The ast time I showed to one of them a coloring I made based on one of her chibi linearts and she was super nice and replied to me, she even said she liked it!!! *o* That tweet will remain forever in my favorites <33

Well I have written to one amateur flash game designer once, and ended up doing scripts for him. (somehow it went that way, but he was actually asking for help with scripts, that is why I have contacted him in the first place)
But I wouldn't call it contacting an author. Because it was slightly different. As for actual authors of books, never did.

In answer to your question about re-reading, my favourite series is Banana Fish. I've read it easily 20-30 times if you count both English and Japanese together. It's 19 volumes long, but so good. I notice new things every time I read it. I admit that changing languages helped keep it fresh as things can get lost in translation and I often re-read it as a measure of how much I'm improving.

I entertain the idea of writing Hayashida Q. (Dorohedoro), Usune Masatoshi (Desert Punk), and Isshiki Makoto (Piano no Mori) time to time, though there have been others I can't remember off hand. All for different reasons, but basically to praise them on their works (though I do want to ask Muira Kentaro to finish Berserk before dying lol). The reason I've never gone through with it is because I don't want them to feel obligated to write to me over a more, um, worthy fan simply because I'm not Japanese. No matter how much I may like a series, I'll never buy it (I'm poor, collect disability and live in Green Bay, WI--no specialty stores with manga here, fuck ordering online). I feel that if the mangaka should take their own time to respond to a fan, it should be one who can at least say they own copies of their works. I'm a guilt-ridden leecher for life. I'm an odd duck.

I've tried contacting Pamela Allen (children's books writer) when I was a kid, but got no reply. I've contacted three manhuajia on u17, didn't get reply either. And then awkward, I got a message from another manhuajia and mangaka after that, who I'm still in contact with. I've also contacted a few novel authors, some light some not - of course, not everyone replied, but some did.

I really, really want to contact KAMEYA Itsuki, but I can't find anything about him. I wonder if it's a pen name.

And also, one of my best friend's boyfriend messaged an author on goodreads. Well, he basically complained about how the plot was rubbish but good, so he still liked it anyway And yep, he got a fairly nice reply.

Yep, a favorite mangaka of mine. I got a list of mangaka's twitter, and found her name. I tweet her in english, saying how much I love her work! I expected no reply at all, but hyaaa she repliiiied to meee :') I found it so cute how her reply is in broken english, means that eventho she wasn't advanced in english, still she used it to reply to me I raaarely open twitter, but I remember a part of her sentences was "very very happy!" :')

I've never tried contacting a mangaka. The only mangaka I would want to contact is the author of Nana because it's my favorite manga, but unfortunately it's unfinished. I know that the author got sick and had to hold off on continuing the manga, but I haven't been able to find out any other information about her in English. I would love to have a chance to thank her for her work, and ask how she's doing.
