At the moment I am very into Josei and Seinen that have dramatic themes as they usually have a much deeper story lines than shoujo/ shounen. As such, I was wondering if anyone can recommend a Josei or Sienen that has such plots. Ones that I've read in Josei are kimi wa pet, Nana and Mars. So far in seinen all I've found is Bitter Virgin. These are stories that have deep and meaningful plot themes and sometimes make you cry. If anyone has any suggestions that are like these that would be great.

Monster and Nijigahara Holograph are both excellent examples, but neither of them are romances. Not sure if they would make you want to cry either, but they certainly are deep and dramatic.

For Josei, I think it's very hard to beat Mars. I don't really like the typical shallow stuff about fashion/modelling....etc, so I don't think I can recommend anything you'll like.

For Seinen, I highly recommend Blood Alone and Chocolat.

Also everything by Inio Asano .... Solanin, Nijigahara Holograph, What a Wonderful World, Oyasumi PunPun....etc .... I personally think he's the best mangaka ever!

Other Seinen favorites are Ciguatera(dramatic) and Homunculus(deep)....

If you want an older/complete series, you can try Living Game. It's a fun read but I don't think it's particularly deep.

Saikano and Bokurano if you're looking for sad/tragic stuff.

There's also a good 1-shot called Socrates in Love.... but it's rated shoujo.

Cheers!!

You may like stuff translated by Kotonoha or Entropy.

Well, most of my suggestions have already been stated so I'll recommend you the anime Gankutsuou~The Count of Monte Cristo...great dramatic plot with a lot of betrayals and manipulation, all for the sake of revenge

Sanctuary
Eternal Sabbath

Also, I second Monster and Saikano, and I think the Chocolat suggested in gan17's post is this one, Chocolat (KUBONOUCHI Eisaku), since the other is not seinen

Berserk by Kentaro Miura . I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

I'll third Monster which is an excellent murder mystery.

If you like Monster you might want too check out both Pluto, 20th Century Boys, and 21st Century Boys. All of them are from the brilliant mangaka Naoki Urasawa

Only got the typical manga to recommend, but they kinda fit in

MPD Psycho is good, and its kinda deep for a bit.

Gantz is deep at points, it might lose you at one point or another(lost me a few times)

School days is Dramatic, and a bit psychologically pressing.

For seinen... well, everyone's about stated everything I wanted to suggest... lol, I think! Though please take note that my suggestions might consider of genres you might not want to touch as I read almost anything out there.

Seinen:
Poppoya Love letter
Under the dapple shade and its' prequel
Blood Alone
Emma
Hotel
Bokko
Aoi Hana
Hourou Musuko
Piano no Mori
Witches Steep in mythology and folklore
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
My Girl (SAHARA Mizu)

Josei:

Himitsu is like totally deep and well-written too.
Hyakki Yakoushou is one of the best series which is steep in mythology and folklore, if you like that sorta thing.
Stone Cold is pretty good.
Maybe also... Paros no Ken(not sure if it's shoujo or josei... lol since it's not mentioned anywhere.)

Hmmm... also, let's see:

Love My Life
Sakuran
Suna no Ue no Rakuen
Indigo Blue
Free Soul
Crash
Deep Love - Ayu no Monogatari Oh and grab ALL the other Deep love series while you're at it. =P

Okay, stuff which might not be that deep but still a fun read:
Cotton
River's Edge
Honey & Honey
Seigi no Mikata
Pieta is also not too shoddy.
Bernie's Drawing Diary
Bathroom Guuwa
Four shoujo stories (yes, it's classified as josei, despite the name)
Gokusen

You should also keep an eye out for Applause which Lililicious is planning on doing.

And hmm... I will concur that some shoujo and shounen are just as good as their counterparts 'cos there's a lot of good and equally horrible stuff out there. Dokebi bride is pretty good if you're looking into a deep psychological supernatural series.
