20th Century Boys is one of those manga for me. I was so hooked to the story I couldn't put it down. In a way, I sort of felt how you described it (feeling like I was part of the story), but that was probably the closest I ever got to having that feeling since I'm not that type of person.

But I think the closet one would've been Bokura ga Ita.
Not much of a favourite but I guess it's close to what I can imagine.
It could turn into some kind of soap opera for all I know.

If you mean lost in the moment reading, for me it was i"s read that whole thing 5 hours, went to sleep, woke up and finished it in 6 hours. it's not even that great among the shounen/rom/coms to me but i just couldn't stop

Hard to believe no one said these, but the realistic artwork of Sanctuary and Strain by Ikegami Ryoichi resembles no other manga series that I can think of.
I'm going to agree with those that said Gunslinger Girl based on the names and the European setting of the manga, but I would say so before the change in art style by the artist, when the art style was reflected by the original Gunslinger Girl anime. After the change the art style looked like Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino, which was a bit too anime/manga-ish.

Again, even to me this doesn't make much sense, but if I've to say something I'll probably say Gunslinger Girl. Not only for the story, but also for the art, because it's set in Italy (where I live) and you can't imagine how much detailed is the reproduction of the places drawn in the manga. Milan, Florence, Naples, Rome are all well detailed. But also for the small aspect, like the newspaper layout, the politics' faces, some italian sentences, etc.
So it looks more realistic for me than any other manga I've read.
Anyway I'm totally agree with this:

Back when I read I''s, I was into it like you. The last time I read it, it was good, but not as good when I first read it (I guess because I was younger and more impressionable lol)

Yeah I feel the same way. I dunno, I love it to bits but when I go through my evaluation it really isn't all that great. There is just something about it that made me love it so.

I think Children of the Sea (kaijuu no kodomo) really fits the description. The art and the story are amazing. Too bad the scanlations stopped, there's no manga publisher in this country.

I don't read something then LITERALLY forget they're mangas. I get what you're saying though. I've read a couple which I KNOW would do well as a movie.. Well.. depending on how good are the ones directing and doing the screenplay and all.
I do agree with some previous ones, Bitter Virgin. I may not fancy the ending much, it left too much out for me. But the story is good enough(FOR ME atleast) for someone to make a good movie out of it. I know there are more, but Bitter Virgin is the one I had recently reread. And had a finishing thought about it becoming a good movie.
