I say 'monga' because that's how I've always said it and then one day I looked it up and that's the right way. my friends (who read manga) try to tell me it's 'manga' (whitenized way) and when I tell them it's 'monga,' they say I'm wrong. D:

I had the same problem... Then I convinced them of the right way.

I tend to say it the whitenized way. Sometimes I'll say it the correct way but then I start thinking of mangos because that's how the word for mango sounds in my native language. I get distracted easily.

Ok, I'd just like to ask, does everyone have a native language?!?! Well, I have one but I don't know how to say "manga" in it

I pronounce "manga" with the "a"s as in "car", more or less. It should be the right pronounciation, right? Cause in all the anime i watch (japanese dub+english sub), its pronounced as i say o.o

Sure, everyone has a native language, it's whatever you grow up speaking. Mine is English; I use the Japanese pronunciation for "manga"

I call'em mangoes, personally, and if not that manga. This is mostly because its not a big deal, seriously guys.

One of my biggest pet peeves are guys who make it a point to pronounce manga as, "Monga", yet completely butcher anything else remotely Japanese. Especially if they chastise you for "doing it wrong", though those are few and far between. I remember one time in a con where one person was explaining the manga style of storytelling, and would completely butcher each and every last author's name, but when it came to manga, she made sure to stretch out the Moooonnnnga as much as she could to show she wasn't behind the times.

If you're really that particular on pronunciation, then make sure you know how to pronounce the whole of Japanese correctly. Otherwise, you're just pretending to be cool in front of nerds which is really depressing to watch.

P.S - "monga" sounds wrong when you read it like that though >_>

I felt so too. At first I thought I was wrong in my Japanese translation.

I say it like "mango" with an a. laugh

And I don't give a flying shit who criticizes me for it. none

Ditto. As long as people understand what I'm saying I don't bother how I pronouce words in general. After all you don't expect people with different accents to pronounce all words the same anyway. I can't speak Japanese (or any language besides English) and when I try (for my aikido class) my accent is terrible.I'm not going to pretend I can just because some people seem to think pronouncing it monga makes you a true fan.

Say "manga" with a Jamaican accent and it'll sound the right way, like "monga." You know how in reggae they say "man" but it sounds like "mon." Yeah, that.

I pronounce it the Finnish way and it actually
sounds just like the original.
Though, I usually speak of mangzor.

I think you should change the first choice into Manga (The Americanized way). laugh

But I chose "manga (the whitenized way)" because whenever I say it the other way, it doesn't feel right to me.

The proper way. Because my cousin told me I was wrong. It took awhile but now I pronounce it properly.
