Wow. This thread really kills the enthusiasm in the whole 'volunteering to provide scanlated projects to all' for a scanlator/translator/editor/cleaner/qc-er. Sucks.

Oh well, we can't win them all.

I read the credit pages. Even the ads (no matter how insignificant they are, sometimes). I don't read them over and over again, of course. I don't memorize the staffs, though (I have way more things to memorize in RL). I do recognize some of them (their usernames, I mean) on fan communities though.

If you're doing it to get your name on the credits page, you'll quit soon enough anyway... you have to be doing it for the love of the manga and to see the fans happy, otherwise you'll be really disappointed by your lack of e-penis improvement.

Yeah no kidding.
But yes I always do because I only read from certain groups, so I know most of the members from such group. Since I take part in different scanlation groups I know how much hard work is put in each release. And yes we may say we do it for the fans but honestly we do like some recognition. Well maybe not all of us smile wink grin

You never know. After all, some people have a lot of perseverance. If they have a lot of perseverance and time, like lamb used to have when he was in 9+ groups, then they might actually manage to get their name on many credits pages.

Yes, I do pay attention to the credits, but not enough attention.

I've been on many hundreds, but no one ever emailed me and said 'hey, your work on Flame of Recca volume 16 was awesome, just wanted to thank you'. If you count your success from number of credit pages, then it's not really that hard to get onto them (people who provide raws, either free from Share (which is so easy that a monkey could do it), or scanned in themselves) can easily get on a dozen credit pages in a few hours.

I do sometimes. If there's a sudden rise in quality, etc. But usually, I leave my comments and thankyous on the site, because it's easier that way.

A credits page is not something you pay much attention to unless you've worked on a scanlation yourself. Being a proofreader for Wingtip Cafe (they do very fun projects - you should go read them!) a while back I appreciate the credits page more now than I did before.

Haha, but did I do that stuff for the number of times my name would appear? Most of the projects I worked on because I liked the series (for various reasons depending on the series). Now of course there were series I helped on but didn't really like doing them, but that was more because the group in particular didn't have anyone else "covering the bases," so to speak.

Like SnoopyCool said, scanlating doesn't bring much e-penis. Sure, your name's out there, but as you can see from the responses in this thread, most people don't read the credit pages. I haven't ever gotten a thank-you email before for scanlating. Only people on IRC that say a quick "thanks!" and then leave. Or the others that just say "hey, aren't you the one that did _____?" (I guess that in itself is some slight ego boost)

There's also the interaction stage with the readers. Do you talk on forums? Visit IRC? Do you generally help other people with their problems?

(Well, in my case, I guess it's a skewed view since I represent MangaUpdates, but yeah...)

No, never have. I've never actually spent more than one half-second viewing those pages, despite having downloaded what feels like thousands of manga. I don't even bother to read editor's notes at the ends or in the margins, unless they're actually related to the manga, because they're often just some guy's random opinion that I'm honestly not very interested in.

I agree with this. Pointless editor's notes where they say stuff like "WHOA BOOBS" or "lol, nice try kaiba!!!!!" in the margins really get to me. I used to use them every now and then, but I realized they're pointless and kind of take away from the manga itself, so now I only include margin notes if it's absolutely necessary.

For credits pages, I usually keep them fairly plain, sometimes with a comment, but most people probably don't find them very interesting. I'm not doing it for the credit anyway, but doing stuff completely anonymously it feels as if I don't have as much of a responsibility to do a quality job, so I include the credits for my own sake (and also for my group bigrazz). Translation notes pages I do are even more boring, but I guess only the extremely dedicated will read those anyway.

Anyway, I usually read the names in the credits, but won't usually remember them.

I don't look at the names but i do read the comments ^^;

And sometimes when I see a typesetting that I would cry when reading ;_; I would immediately find the credits page to look at who the typsetter is.. usually the same as the cleaner..who is the same as the scanner... also the same as the translator... o_o

e-penis... laugh

Anyway, I do pay attention, because I try to see who does the better job at scanlating chapters so I know where to get them from then on.

And as gringe said, those pointless editor notes in the margins is really unneeded. If they feel the need to do that, then they should do it on the credits page like some already do.

hmm... sometimes I look at the credits, but perhaps not as much as I should, after all, people put a lot of work into scanlations and Im very grateful to the people who do. But I must admit I kind of think of them like credits on a video or DVD, as in I dont pay much attention and fastforward that section to go to the good part.

I just want to say that now I do look at the names. And surprisingly, I've begun to remember them now. biggrin

I should just stop naming the credit page credit page and start naming it page 01 or randomly give it one of the middle page numbers xD

Wait... or is that kind of evil? Fu fu fu

I read em'. How much I remember varies.

I read the comments and actually quite enjoy them if they are funny or at least talk about what's going on with the group. I don't like if the comments are immature though. I prefer to read words from people that are worth listening to.

I work in a couple scanlation groups and I think it's interesting to hear what goes on behind the scenes.

Some of the most memorable credits pages I've seen were Eldo's credits pages for Air Gear. I actually kept reading the chapters just to read his comments.
