I sometimes wish my RAW provide didn't require me to put watermarks on our scans, but I gave up caring, lol. I'm pretty much the same way most people are: "if they aren't in the way, who cares?" And, for me, I think too many people use scanlations as a replacement for a series as opposed to a way to promote it. Every series that my group scanlates is literally pulled from my own personal library. And, if it's something weekly/monthly, I buy it as soon as it comes out. But, I know plenty of people (even my own friends) who will ONLY get the scanlations and not the books. When you ask them, you get things like "The scanlation quality is so great, why should I go spend money on it" and things like that. That does NOT promote the manga/mangaka in anyway, and I've always found it a bit depressing. Of course, if they come out in English, I try to buy them, albeit I have been skipping on some series because their English release was just THAT horrible @_@ Plus, money nowadays is so tight!

So, I can understand not wanting to put watermarks on entirely, and I don't agree or disagree with watermarks period (I'm neutral), but I think about 90% of all people who read scanlations will just keep the scans and that's it. So, since I'm forced to put them on anyways, I'd like to think that maybe it will inspire the readers to go out and buy an official release, if there ever is one >.>

That kind of people wouldn't buy it even if it wasn't scanlated, you know?

Well, as long as it isn't distracting, or if it's for a good reason, then it's okay.Like how Binktopia started doing it because of Tazmo and BleachExile pretending like they did all of the work.

So recently a few groups have been getting their raws from somewhere called "RAWPARADISE", and I must say...what the bloody hell?

They put a watermark on EVERY page?
That's bloody ridiculous!
Not much of a "paradise" if you're gonna mark them all innit?...even if you provide a lot of them.

Like I said in my previous statement, I don't really mind them unless they're huge and they cover a huge portion of a particular koma - and in addition to that, unless they're on every page.

I read somewhere that Shounen Jump got pissed off at them for releasing RAWs before the magazine even got published.

Uhm, street date.

Obviously they stock up before the release date. They got a hold of some copies, scanned them and released them before they were officially supposed to be sold.

That Raw Paradise thing is fucking ridiculous, I can see watermarks on the most popular series maybe once a release, but all of them? And so much of it?

Pretty stupid.

I hate watermarks I really do. They are annoying and ruins the "feeling" when you read the manga. Small ones you can overlook sometimes but big ones are annoying, specially when you want to really enjoy the picture or want to use it somewhere.

After saying all that, being in scanlation groups I know the feeling of wanting to use the watermarks. Let's be real; Lots of idiots out there who take credits for your work. We do this for free...some buy the raws when they scan, some uses time on translating, cleaning, typesettings, proofreading, qualitychecking the manga before you read.We do it for FREE! the only thing we want is that our stuff got a credit page which tells that it was us who worked on it. How would you feel if the stuff you worked on and the page which tells others that you did got ripped out of the release and then put up on the net by some idiots taking credit for your work and heck even earning money on it? (Oh, wait most of you people here don't even work on scanlations so you wouldn't know and don't even give a damn about it..but we do and we will..always XD ) You feel yourself cheated as hell.

Now I know someone will go and say: Then don't scanlate if you can't handle it!
Heh, if we all did that where would you get your manga?

I normally don't check our releases on the net since I already got them and I don't go to online sites to download manga. Though if I ever did and found out that our credit page and recruit page was taken out I would contact the site hosters first and ask them politely to stop doing that if they didn't understand my words then my actions would have to make them understand: Watermarks all over the place!

BUT I still hate watermarks...so I hope the sites will start giving credits to the groups who release them by not taking credit for something they didn't do, just like we don't take the credit for the mangakas work (story and art). This we there won't be a need for watermarks and everyone can enjoy their manga.
biggrin

Hmmm... I guess it's annoying if there are watermarks on every page (especially from scanlation groups).

The Raw-Paradise one is different. I don't really care about that. I mean, I go to their site to read my raws, and I know a lot of other people take credit for their scans so I think it's still better if they watermark their stuff than scan groups crediting the wrong people. Besides, it's not like the watermark is blocking text or something. It may be distracting but not to the point where you can't read a chapter completely.

Watermarks aren't really that bothersome if there in the corner of the page and aren't overlapping text boxes.

Some providers/scantalators will put a watermark right across someone's forehead. That just pisses me off. What makes them feel that they're that much entitled to stamp something so much it impedes the original work? How much credit do you feel you deserve for scanning something?

Stamp on the forehead, lol!!!

Well I have to say that is absurd. I'd totally drop reading that manga if it had the watermark there, lol forehead XD

About the credit....well they bought it so they can do whatever they want with their copy of it, or aren't they allowed to do that since you don't like it?
Of course if you don't like it then you can buy it and scan it yourself. This may not apply to you but 90%(or is it more) of the people out there won't do that but complain instead...which doesn't help a lot since it's just "lots of rage and nothing to gain"...

Btw those words aren't to piss you off but to show you another perspective which you probably don't think about in your dailyday when you read manga and get pissed of the watermarks. So take no offense.

lol, what manga was it that had the stamp on the forehead? Gimme title I need a good laugh, lol. laugh

A lot of groups DO buy their raws and scan it. 90% is too big of a number.
In the case of WSJ/SS, etc. subscription is quite expensive so we have to rely on online providers. Some groups aren't thinking enough and they don't credit the right people and that's why watermarks are there.

I can understand if scan groups put watermarks on some pages, but it's just ridiculous if there's one on every page.

ahh niiica, you must have misunderstood me. Sorry, sometimes I forget something called grammar XD

I meant the leechers/readers/suckers/whiners, call them what you want. The number is attached to them too. I know groups buy raws and scan them, and yes I find them putting watermarks on every 5th page too....not too mention I find it annoying. Like I said before I hate watermarks^^

I'm just saying that the reader got no saying in stuff that they haven't worked on or bought. The only thing they can do is say their opinion, rage and then it's over. It's not like they are going to boycot the manga because they love it and want to read more.(sometimes no matter how bad the quality is... no )

Oh, btw...those groups who buy the manga, most of them like something called donations, lol.
