I strongly second Parasyte and Gantz, though with Gantz it's more of a emo looser to hero everyone looks up to.

mmm i haven't read all the posts but i have read most. the only one i haven't seen yet is:

Mahou Sensei Negima.

the story quality is around the same level as love hina, the author in my opinion didn't improve his story telling abilites. ><. still the manga does have its good points

Hmm how about anything that is less actiony and more slice of life, school life and romancey like Othello which was said above.

Here's ones that are a lot less actiony adventure story:
Beck Which you've already have on your reading list. Loser kid, gets in a band and really grows
One Goes from reserved, timid, kid to pop idol.

Although i'm pretty positive, that his kind, nice, timid nature at the beginning of the story was just an act.

Ookiku Furikabutte Main character is really really timid to the 100 billionth degree. He's slowly improving.
Mars The main female character is rather timid and weak but as her relationship with her boyfriend depens the stronger, they both grow(mentally) as people.
Onegai Teacher Timid, and physically weak kid. Ends up marrying his alien teacher because of a misunderstanding. He grows as their relationship matures a bit.
NHK ni Youkoso! Guy holed up in his room, watching porn and doing drugs, jobless blocked off from society. And a high school girls decides to make him her personal project.

That's all I can think of right now, that isn't Boy love/yaoi.

Moe Kare is kind of like that.
