I'm saying that DBZ in itself wasn't cliche at the time.

The concept is so much overdone now, that it has become cliche. Cliche isn't necessarily bad, it just means that some concept gets used a lot. It's all in the way how you implement it in the story.

... And most fail at it, sadly.

DBZ was one of the first anime I've ever watched. Even at that, I found those themes repetitive and unrealistic.

But yeah, cliches have to come from somewhere too, and DBZ was the source...

Well I'm not sure if this would be considered cliched but..

When the main character won't kill no matter how evil the villain is. (Gotta say though, Kenshin's an exception)

most of them i hate....just too many to name, but this one will make me drop a manga most the time....i hate that shit

I know how you feel. I especially hate the ones where they kill foot soldiers and officials, then get up to the main villain and yet spare their life because "I don't wanna end up like you: a mass murderer."

Um...didn't you just like, SEND HALF THEIR ARMY TO HELL while trying to get to them?

Saving the damsel in distress, who is so darn useless, all she can do is cry or cheer on the protagonist. And if the useless girl gets a power-up, she's still pretty darn useless (Ruika - one fight and then she's down). What's worse. the girl is weak AND stupid. I mean, come on, at least give her intelligence to be useful. Of course, I'm usually only annoyed with this cliche if the manga is in in a fantasy setting where everyone can do magic or something. In a fantasy, weak girls have no excuse to me. smile

Next, the cliche were the protagonist is definitely the strongest of the good guys but his strength in battles against enemies is like a yoyo. I personally feel that Bleach is especially bad with this.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
I mean, Ichigo automatically beats a couple of captains in the first arc. I expected him to fail, even with Yoruichi's help and all. I felt like he should have been beaten right away.

I wouldn't call Rukia weak and stupid just because she's not on the same level as Ichigo or some other characters. I'd actually say she's a fairly strong female lead. Bleach over all has one of the more appealing female casts of the big shounen manga in my opinion.

But yeah, females do have the unfortunate tendency to not be powerful or useful in a lot of shounen manga. I like to specifically find manga that go against this cliche myself. Strong girls are sexy. They're definitely part or my fantasies...

In response to the topic, my least favorite shounen cliche is when some generic, uninteresting loser manages to get some incredibly hot chick to fall for him just because he's the main character. It just annoys me. Single reason I can almost never read shounen romance unless it's yuri.

Oh, and I hate it when the main character gets the girl in movies. Like in Transformers and Disturbia, there was really no time to get all romantic but the protagonist still gets the girl. I just automatically think, "Oh, they'll break up within the week." biggrin

I wouldn't say that Rukia is stupid. I think she's pretty average in intelligence. I was just noting how when we finally got to see Rukia fight, she was defeated by someone else just seconds after her winning. By "the girl is usually weak and..." I meant the damself in distress. Sorry for the confusiong. Now, Orihime. She's the one that I can't stand. She's really only good for healing (her shield can shatter). She's mainly the cheerleader (and later damsel in distress in the second arc) and she's definitely an airhead (which I can't stand). As for strong female leads, I think Yoruichi has more potential, but she's been gone from the battlefield for too long and her role is much too small to get the coverage I would like.

Well I like Orihime personally. She's not the most useful character (though her healing and other abilities make her far from useless in my opinion) and she can be annoying at times though, so I suppose I can see your point.

With Rukia, I didn't really think much of her being defeated. She's an unseated officer. She's supposed to be beneath a good majority of the cast in terms of power in the first place.

And yes, Bleach definitely needs more Yoruichi. She's my favorite.

Orihime acts like an airhead, but she's actually pretty smart.
I think she was second smartest of the whole grade or something.

Also, yes to more Yoruichi. I have a sig tribute to her. cool

What really bothers me?
I-NEED-TO-SHOUT-MY-ATTACK-AT-YOU-WHILE-I'M-DOI NG-IT!
You know, just giving the enemy a head's up. Nice job

Even in sports manga, like PoT, where they shout the names of their serves and stuff.

Second would be the person who sits by the sidelines and tries to explain what is going on in the fight/match/game.

I'll use PoT again, how the reporters/team mates just sit there and go into long-winded explanations of how what just happened is totally scientifically possible. Like, 'huh, well see he can jump 30 feet in the air because when he starts the jump he pivots with his right foot and the momentum, blah, blah, axis on the, blah, blah, amazing!' I'm sorry, I don't care how awesome a tennis player you are, you can't jump like that, or fly, or have rainbow glowing eyes. Please, please stop trying to explain why that is possible.

Same to fighting manga where they state the obvious. 'Look, he's kicking him in the face, because that will hurt.' Well, no shit!

I hate the commentator too. In Ippo I can stand it when it's actual live commentary because what's boxing without live commentary? But when Takamura and Miyata and other all-knowing figures start with the explanations my eyes just roll up into my head. But I seem to recall that Slam Dunk was pretty light on the commentary bits. That's one of the things I liked about it.

not to sure it'll be classed as a cliche. But i absolutely can't stand the girls who stand on the side lines and can't do a thing except for follow the main character around like a lost puppy. Really wish they would just kill those characters off
