i thought the twist when

Lelouch from Code Geass cast the Geass on Euphie by accident and forced her to announce the slaughter of all the Japanese people to be incredibly sad as well

One word shamo, I have read Battle Royale but somehow the protagonist's ruthlessness in Shamo really unnerved me..

School Days The "nice boat" scene in the anime satisfied me to no end, but the manga is different and the ending was horrifying.

Full Moon wo Sagashite

When you find out Eichi has been dead since the day he left Mitsuki, so she wants to die to see him again but lives because her parents died to give her life and so she can keep her promise of getting closer to her dream.
Also finding how the shinigami died, especially the dog eared one, what was his name?

Closest i've ever come to crying in a manga was when you find out about Eichi.
The end of that series was stupid, too happy and too many people were alive

and singing

I'd like to change my opinion to The Demon Ororon.

It made me cry more than Full Moon wo Sagashite.

Yeah. Try and beat that Mitsuki >=I

The embalmer, Doll: IC in a doll and Rebirth (it had it's moments) . The first one outright made me sob, and the second one deeply disturbs me for some reason.
Fullmoon wo sagashite left me completely cold, there was something missing from that scene...

Deep Love. The only one I read, I don't usually read sad mangas and my first time crying because of a manga was while reading Deep Love.

After researching into this topic (and a little of what I picked up along the way,) I would have to say;
Saikano is definitely number one on the most depressing list.
"The last love-song on the planet," as it was stated before exemplifies and represents the mood of the story. It is rather torturous.

Zetman would be a close second, can you say unsmiley face for him.
Airen is another, though not super depressing.

Now, Ichigo 100% is not depressing. Rather, it is infuriating. The protagonist is the most annoying type of guy, unable to choose between 3 potential consorts and he just ping-pongs back n' forth between them.

To continue from the infuriating prior, School Days is even more infuriating to the point of depression (I had to stop reading it, it made me so "grah.") The protagonist for this one was a complete loser.

Honorable mentions: Uncivilized Planet (it was so screwed.) and Basilisk (too artistic to be depressing, a Japanese Shakespearian tragedy, I do say).

I have not read every manga on this planet, these are from my experiences and even then I still probably forgot some depressing ones from back in the day.

I agree completely. Yes, it's depressing, but mainly because you can only want to yell at a fictional character for so long before you start to feel miserable! See the aforementioned "infuriating" factor popping up at all?

I'd have to say that Haou Airen deserves to be in the running. While it's true that it's also infuriating, it's more depressing than anything else. Ah, the misery~~ allow me to go cry myself to sleep now~~

And Deep Love -Ayu no Monogatari- was one of the most horribly depressing things I've ever read too. Who write this stuff, anyway? Someone who enjoys the feeling of wanting to kill themselves??

Eternal Sabbath is really depressing, especially the ending 🙁 Fruits Basket is sad also, probably the only manga that makes me cry repeatedly because i know what is going to happen before it happens. Vampire Girl is sad too. I mean, it is a never ending cycle of hate that will go on forever!!#!$$! 🙁

Hmm, Alive was pretty depressing.

And yes I agree that Basilisk is too poetic and action-packed to be depressing, but I got choked up more than I'd like to admit while watching the anime and then again when I read the manga.

Negative Happy Chain Saw Edge has this gloomy air about it, but it's too funny and sweet to stay sad for too long.

I think most of us here would agree that Saikano has made us all suicidal at one point.

And even though people often overlook this series b/c of the intense violence, Elfen Lied is actually pretty sad.

Fire Candy and Helter Skelter. The first in the everything sucks and life is pointless kinda way. The second is a fall from grace type of story.

I don't think anyone mentioned, which is kind of surprising, but i'd say my top depressing manga ever is Loveless. The story is sad, the characters all have this kind of melancholy about them, everything that happens, even the casual, trivial things, always seem to have a vaguely depressing feel to them.
Don't get me wrong, Loveless is one of the most brilliant series I've ever read. It's shonen-ai but i don't even think you need to actually like shonen-ai to love it. The art is gorgeous, the characters are so FECKING LOVEBALE, the plot is intriguing...i absolutely love it--but at the end of the day, whenever i put a Loveless volume down, my cheer is down to ZERO. I have to go and watch Ouran high Host Club to cheer me up >< (and i'm not even going to talk about the anime. Suffice it to say that just listening to the soundtrack (which, being the sad little otaku that i am, i actually downloaded) makes me cry like an idiot)
Also, another depressing shonen-ai: Let Dai.
I've only started reading it, it's incredibly addictive and I'm head over heels in love with the series, but GOSH. It's almost like I'm on the verge of just wanting to die whenever i stop reading it. Seriously 😔
--Fruits Basket.
I kind of feel cheated by Furuba sometimes, because it started out so sweet and hilarious and cute, and i'm now on volume 11 and i didn't make it through vol 11 without crying.
If it wasn't such an absolutely awesome and loveable manga....i'd hate it >
<
But come on, let's admit it: depressing manga makes the heart feel like marshmallow. It feels good to feel bad from time to time 🙂 otherwise you start to feel bad about feeling good and then you just feel like an idiot.
Or maybe that's just me X3
