While re-organizing my music, I noticed that for some of the artist folders would have a "Covers" folder, which spawn this thread.

I've heard covers that have made me depressed, and some that are almost as good (if not better) than the original. No matter how terrible some of them may be, I always considered it a respectful gesture to the original artists (there may be some exceptions to this).

Basically, I want to know what's your opinion of covers. What are some of your favorite covers? Maybe you can give some that are unknown. Feel free to list some of the worst covers out there (in your opinion).

I'll refrain from listing my faves until I see some of your thoughts/favorites~

Some of my favorites:
Ensiferum - Lady in Black (Uriah Heep cover)
Van Canto - Battery (Metallica cover)
Nightwish - Symphony of destruction (live, Megadeth cover) (I know I'll get shot for saying I much prefer Hietala's vocals over Mustaine's, but eh... just said it.)
Folkearth - Heathenpride (Falkenbach cover)

I used to have a folder filled only with random covers, but it got eaten by the dark side of the harddisk. cry

I can only think of NIN's covers right now. Head Like A Hole by AFI was ugli (or I just don't like the band) and Down In It by Tiga is great.

Usually, I consider covers from the hit charts as a form of incompetence or inability to make something good yourself. Mostly because those " artists" have one or two hit songs, and if one of those is a cover, it feels (to me) as if they become popular with someone else's work.

Also a lot of people don't know when something is a cover (honestly, I often don't either) so there's little " honor" for the original artist because no one knows the original version. Like Madonna's American Pie. It's actually Don McLean's, but many people (I know at least) are very surprised when you tell them.

Unfortunately, sooo many songs are actually covers so this opinion of mine is a little... unfair, really. ^^;;

I think Nightwish - Over the Hills And Far Away is a great cover, as well as Edmee - Listen to your heart and Counting Crows - Big Yellow Taxi

I hate Lucy Silvas - Nothing Else Matters with a passion, though I can't explain why laugh

Off the top of my head, I like Rufus Wainwright's cover of "Across the Universe"

And anyone who does a cover of "Thriller" no matter how lame, is win in my opinion laugh

Ooh, how could I forget Metallica's cover of "Turn The Page"? Not as good as the original, but they did a nice job of keeping the same feel and making it modern.

My opinion depends on who is doing the cover. But all in all, I like hearing them if only to laugh at how bad they are.

I listen to quite a few covers, and I find I mostly enjoy the covers that sound nothing like the original.

The ones I like most:
Strange Fruit and Lilac Wine by Jeff Buckley
Waitin for a Superman by Iron and Wine
Between the Bars by Chris Garneau
Peach Plum Pear by Owen Pallett
Running Up That Hill by Placebo
Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana
One More Cup of Coffee by The White Stripes
Wonderwall and Wild is the Wind by Cat Power
Creep by Damien Rice
Oh, and Blower's Daughter by Gary Lightbody

There is probably more, I just can't remember them right now. I can't think of any in particular I hate, but that is probably more because I've blocked them from my memory.

cover artist - song name (original artist)

Jack Johnson - Imagine (John Lennon) - original is a classic, but this cover was pretty nice.

The Postal Service - Against All Odds (Phil Collins)

Apocalyptica - Fade to Black (Metallica) - suddenly, heavy metal sounds so sweet...

The Killers - Shadowplay (Joy Division)

PS22 Chorus - Viva La Vida (Coldplay) - just look them up on youtube... it's happy.

Nouvelle Vague - This Is Not a Love Song (Public Image Ltd.)

The ones that come to mind are the Metallica covers... what Metallica covers

Such as "Am I Evil?", "Crash Course in Brain Surgery", "Last Caress"/"Green Hell", "Die, Die My Darling", "Turn the Page" , "Whiskey in the Jar", and "Tuesday's Gone".

Though, I liked the original version of "Turn the Page" better.

Then there are other ones like Heart-Shaped Box by Jordis Unga, I'm on Fire by Bat for Lashes, Such Great Heights by Ben Folds, Hello Skinny/Constantinople by Primus, Hurt by Johnny Cash, China Girl by David Bowie, and Come Together by Joe Cocker.

I like a lot of the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge covers. Hearing artists sing songs that are completely different to the genre they originally sing and how they attempt to cover the song is interesting to hear.
One example would be Lostprophets - Cry me a River
Love this cover.

I generally don't like covers. I like the original and tend to see covers as artists just trying to make money off a song they didn't make.

The only song, so far, where I like the covers just as much as the original is Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper.

There's suppose to be at least 120 different covers o.O (according to wiki) but I like these two:

cover by INOJ

cover by Ronan Keating
