I think Suzuka would be good. The main character is kind of an idiot (literally, hes stupid) but he falls in love with the girl at first sight. It is really sweet at parts, but kinda depressign at others. I almost cried during this one, and I never cry.

i know exactly what u looking for. School Rumble..granted that male char is pretty dumb, but it a good manga nonetheless.
Edit : i forgot about Love Monster. this one got a cool guy that work towards gaining his love one. though it doesnt seem that hard to me..

The only one that fits your description that it's not still quoted here would be Bokura ga ita, the only problem is that the girl falls in love first.
But the boy is strong, sometimes mean, sometimes sweet, sometimes has to work hard to keep the relationship, etc.

Other than that I second Tokyo Crazy Paradise, Skip Beat, Stroke Material, Love Monster and Special A. These manga really fit your description.
But Moe kare and Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu DO NOT come even close to what you want unless you like mean a****lishguys.

guys usually have the bigger approach.
some girls would be tooo shy to walk up to a guy.
but girls know the effects of love when they watch a drama. so some are more careful.
