Why do some groups drop manga when it gets licensed? I mean manga like Naruto is licensed and yet, like 10 groups still release chapters.

Scanlating is pretty much a fan service for people who can't read the manga in its original language. When english licensor license the manga, basically they're translating the manga into english. Some groups want to support the mangaka by dropping their projects, encouraging fans to buy the licensing copies to support the author/artist.

There's also the legal issue, lol...

Oh, and as for Naruto... I'm speechless with it.

I know they want to support sells, but I mean with them dropping it and the licensor picking it up, means you have to wait even longer for the current chapter the group dropped it on. I mean I know some people who have read certain manga online and still buy the manga when it's released in english.

That doesn't really apply to every fan out there, not everybody read scanlation and buy the original copy.

And you can't really complain. The legal issue regarding scanlating and licensing is also another problem scanlators have to face...

Because scanlating is an illegal thing.

When they are licensed, it brings more attention to that manga, and also to the scanlation groups, and they CAN be shut down for it. No one wants to take that risk...except for those select groups who do it anyways, like you said, the Naruto scanlators.

Be happy that you're getting what you're getting for free.

Because they can, and they're the ones giving up their time to bring it to you.

Let's put it this way- is there a greater incentive to purchase a manga if you have the option to if you read it and buy it afterward if you liked it, or if you have to buy it to read in the first place?

Sales are going to be higher if a purchase is required. That's just common sense.

As others have said, scanlating is technically an illegal practice. How long you have to wait is irrelevant- most groups are either too ethical to continue afterward (although that position is admittedly somewhat hypocritical) or would rather not risk legal intervention, unlikely and impractical though it may be.

Basically, just don't complain. It's more logical than continuing.

Don't forget the annoyance of all the little fartknockers who didn't know a manga existed before it got licensed, but afterwards show up to demand that it not be dropped.

I personally dedicate any dropping I may do to them.
(Though, in reality there are many different reasons, of course.)
