Yes, a poll!
I've found some argues about the worst art and basicaly it was throwing tomatoes into someone's beloved manga, kinda depressing in general and with "coz its just ugli period" thing.
I want to know what is exactly a bad art for readers. Write an essay or provide a picture or both. Whatever.

As for myself I'll start with marking poll options. (don't think I designed this part as necessity for everyone, but if you wish so... )

messy lines - Like in this thread, good. Some web comics has it though, no good.

stylized harsh - I love that

cliched/mediocre - kinda ignore it

messed up human proportions - Wins. Hurts my eyes so badly. Just can't look at too long legs/big shoulders/mouth in the wrong place/tip of the nose facing on the side/everted perspective. I've noticed some mangakas draw perfectly one or two projections of a face and the other is ugly.
Is a frequent feature of yaois btw.

Sometimes I read manga and consider the art a pure win and then find comments such as 'ugly' or 'wtf' or 'tasteless' or smth of the sort. For example Arigatou's comments say either "ugly" or nothing about art. B-but just take a look at this reporter. Isn't he hilarious with that mouth and little finger?
Or Machino Henmaru (makes hentai though). pic *giggles

Also I've read some comments on Maruo Suehiro saying his art is bad. what?

for me,it's the art that looks like it wasn't finished,or the manga-ka didn't give much effort into drawing it.
messy lines comes second.

I have a problem with messed-up proportions. Idealized features and physical characteristics don't bother me, but I have a hard time looking past a figure that, say, has a head that is too small. Or bulging muscles where no such muscles exist. Things of that nature. Not that I draw people very well myself, but at least I step back, take note of what looks bad, and try to correct it (bodes well for my chances of getting published someday, I suppose). dead

I'd consider Law of Ueki bad, same with early angel densetsu.

What I consider bad is just that, no consistency between panels, poor propotions and lines. Messy lines are fine as long as it works well with the scene, but if it's just badly drawn like some 3 year old crayon scribbles then it's just bad.

Actually, if it looks like a 5 year old can do better than the mangaka, then it's definitely bad. none

remember that almost every manga has messed up human proportions. the head is usually a little oversized but that it generalization.
i honestly just think that bad art is art that has little or no thought/time put into it

The only art I'd consider "bad" is when you can't tell what the heck is supposed to be happening. (O_o)

The other stuff doesn't bother me too much; of course I prefer to have the art consistent, visually appealing, proportional, etc. but I can get used to pretty much anything as long as I can tell what's going on in the manga.

Seconded. If there is sincere effort put in by the artist, then the artwork will be interesting at the very least, and I find that the most important thing.

The only time proportion bothers me is when:
-The artist has clearly never seen an anatomy textbook.
-Proportions are inconsistent between panels.

I'm gonna have to agree w/ this one. B/c there are manga where the art is beautiful, but it's so sloppily put on paper, that you have no idea what's going on. Even Gantz a had a chapter like that. Can't remember which, it was during Nurarihyon fight.

Although, I must say that early Shinjo Mayu irks me a bit. I can't really put my finger on one thing in particular though. confused

I guess it's "messed up human proportions" for me too... it's just painful to look at some characters.. like they're some freaks of nature or smth)) but i've rarely encountered such bad art that i would drop.. i usually can cope with stuff if i'm past several chapters..
although it's not really connected with art, but if scanlations are not in focus.. then art doesnt matter anymore..

Def. messed up body proportions. It pisses me off.

I notice it straight away as well. Even in the ones with the decent art, I can tell when something is out of proportion. I drive myself insane laugh

But at the end of the day, mangaka are humans, and we are not perfect. If it's consistant though...then, I just won't read the manga. I think i've dropped quite a few manga's because I didn't like the art.

Ehm, why does messed up body proportions get the most votes? I don't see anything wrong with it, rather it can be quite the unique drawing style, maybe expressing some state of mind through the art style, hence why the body proportions are "messed up".

I have more trouble with cliched/mediocre art,
which there are dozens off...

The only problem I ever have with art is if the proportions are horribly off, and the shading looks like it was done in MS Paint.

Of course, I've never actually seen this in printed comics. :3

It's fine if it's intentional or stylized, but if it's just because the artist doesn't understand the anatomy and makes up something then it looks and feels bad. Too bad there's no "inconsistent art" option or I would've gone with that. Cliched/mediocre art usually have cliched/mediocre stories to round it out so it only ever ends up as cliched/mediocre in my view so it's far from bad. none

That's it.
