When you go to University, if your school offers Japanese classes, sign up. I think at least 75% of my Japanese class at least somewhat like anime/manga.

No offense, but wouldn't that rather easily be classified as rape? roll eyes

Are you implying there's anything wrong with rape?

Dramatic look

See, that's always the problem. The only ones you can easily tell are fans are the extreme ones (weaboos apparently, thank you for the term Pikapu biggrin ).

All the people I've met have either been talking about it with someone else (and I just jumped into their conversation), or have been reading a hard copy. Or sometimes I'll bring a hard copy and someone who knows about anime/manga will ask me about it.

The problem with this, though, is you tend to get a lot of noobs who only read 2 or 3 Tokyopop series and nothing else...... D:
I've only found one proper fan, and she turned out to be a weaboo. They're annoying, so it didn't turn out well.

I've always wanted to ask this, but what is the biggest defining factor between an otaku and a weaboo.

Thanks for all your support! I'll give it my best!

When it comes to weeabos (didn't know what the term meant until now) there's no problem. If the thing about being one is that you can't stop talking about anime/manga then I'm sort of a weeabo (I guess?) and I could talk for an infinite amount of time about anime or manga so I don't really mind meeting a weeabo.

I still want more advice so if anyone has anything to say or share I'd appreciate it!

Funny topic! As a fan of Densha Otoko I couldn't let it pass by!

I believe, and this is true in my country at least, that talking to a girl on the bus is pretty hard, especially if the bus is usually crowded like you said it is. Reasons: most people go in groups after school and are usually talking amongst themselves; if she's alone she's probably listening to some music, just trying to ignore the noise; it's really not an easy task to sit or go near the person you want to if there are no empty seats. So my advice would be that you forget about the bus. Well, not forget because sometimes miracles happen and the perfect opportunity may appear.

I think you should do as someone mentioned: read a manga where she can notice you. If possible do it more than once. If she's shy she won't approach you but you still win a little advantage. How? Well if she sees you as someone who likes manga you won't be just a complete random stranger if you ever talk to her, so she may be a little more receptive, so to speak. She won't be thinking "Who is this guy and why's he talking to me?" she'll be thinking "Oh it's that guy who reads manga... I wonder why he's talking to me." It's small but it's a little improvement.

Now the real problem is how you talk to her the first time... Stalk her for a bit, but don't overdo it of course, and find out where she usually spends her free time in school. Maybe you'll get a hint from that.

On the topic of weaboos.
From what I understand, there are a few key features to being a weaboo.
1. You think Japan is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread and internet porn.
2. You think that, through watching anime, you are an expert on Japanese culture.
3. You often use Japanese terms like kawaii, baka and shit.

I believe these are key signs to being a weaboo.
Now you know.
And knowing is half the battle.

On-topic.
have you tried pulling her hair? it did help my six year old cousin get a girl.
In all seriousness though, my advice, go straight for the prize.
When you see her just tell her you think she's cute and that you share an interest/hobby, so you wanted to get to know her better. Invite her for coffee or something and talk with her about whatever. If you two click, congrats. if not, well, you gave it a good shot. Always better than doing nothing.

If she's seriously shy, there's a chance she'll withdraw completely using that method...

The bus idea is probably the best bet. I personally wouldn't talk to her the first time tho, It would suck if you did and she got off real fast, or you caused her to miss her stop(not as bad).

Last week I met a girl on the train, since it was crowded it was easy to pick the seat next to her, since so few spots were available. As it was a 4 hour train ride, I just got bored and struck up a conversation. No clue what I said, neither her nor I remember. Hit it off great, if only we weren't thousands of miles apart......

I would go with the bus idea. And better yet, if it's a long bus ride, have something to read. If you're reading a manga and she looks interested in it, then you're in. Bur anything can be good conversation starters. Books, mangas, magazines, news papers......
