Offensive? Otaku also means residence in Japanese.
"Is this the XXX residence?" = "XXXno otaku desu ka?"
Besides, Urban dictionary is edited by people of the street - don't take it to heart; use a reliable source.

I'm not an otaku, but what the heck.
I read manga and watch anime (anime- not so much..)

Err....Hmm.....
Let's say I'm about as obsessive as you can get without having your parents totally kill you. I only started about 2 1/2 years ago, but my manga list (not including doujinshi/oneshots) is already 7 pages long (yes, I keep track of my manga/anime). I'm always trying to draw doujinshi, and I have my own privite library full of manga, but it's on the computer (downloaded stuff, not actual books since my parents wouldn't allow it).
I proudly proclaim my obsessiveness of manga to anyone and everyone, and that usually causes everyone to give me weird looks (I am pretty much a socially unaccepted person because I am an otaku and no I'm not exaggerating). My only close friends (not including internet) are people who can stand my daily rants about whatever manga I happen to be reading. My obsessiveness has taken away basic knowledge of American culture away from me (another reason why everyone thinks I'm weird; I have no idea what's popular from music to tv shows)
Also, another "otaku" trait I have is that I have NO SENSE of fashion whatsoever. I wear whatever's comfortable and happens to be lying around. And I haven't stepped in the mall for over a year (the only time I go shopping at all is when I'm at Borders/some other bookstore).
Is that obsessive enough?
Oh and about that whole "otaku is an offensive word" thing. It's true. But it's like being proud that you're an idiot, or proud that you're weird, or something like that. You can be "proud" of being an otaku, even if the word's not very positive.

otaku is generally someone who has obsessive interests over something,
but it is more widely known for someone who has obsessive interests over anime/manga
using an adjective modifies otaku: you can be a music otaku - obsessive over music
if you just say otaku, it is generally understood as obsession over anime/manga
anyways...for me i read anime/manga obsessively, but im too lazy to collect and download-im impatient while waiting
also, i fantasize about anime/manga characters...*evil laugh*
so i guess im somewheres like hardcore, and almost otaku

I have a pretty big collection of manga, a REALLY long wishlist with manga titles, a few anime and my biggest dream is to become a true mangaka (I'm currently planning to try drawing a doujinshi).
I don't deny my obsession, I just try to hide it. But my obsession will probably never dissappear, because to me, it is one of my few purposes to live...

I'm pretty hardcore watching anime and reading manga, I've pretty much watched any anime that didn't suck since 2004. Reading manga since 2006. About 3 hours of every day is dedicated to anime/manga. It's not something I'm incredibly proud of but I do like to shoot down the narutards every now and then at my school.
Its also purely at home. Like when I go to the bookstore, I DON'T IMMEDIATELY GO TO THE MANGA SECTION, I look for books >_>. In fact, the only reason people actually know I watch anime and read manga is because when I go watch some I tell the to stop messaging me because I'm about to watch anime...
P.S. Why the heck do people cosplay? It scares me very much.

I read and buy manga and anime. More reading than buying. There are a couple action figures and keychains in my room of some of my favourite manga/anime figures. Then there is my stuffted Totoro collection and totoro music box. Somwhere I've got posters of some of my favourite animes as well but they are packed away.
I also love cosplay, I really need to learn to sew so I can make some costumes..
Not an Otaku in the true sense. I can't regurgitate information about manga/anime at the drop of a hat, don't even know who wrote most of them.
The impression I've gotten from the word Otaku in Japan is that although it was originally just a term for somone who was an obsessive fan of something it got bad association when Tsutomu Miyazaki was arrested. So for awhile it was associated with obsessed anime fans who were perverts and couldn't function in society. Recently I think it's moving back to becoming a more favorable term as evidenced by the Densha Otaku movie and it's popularity.
I think it is viewed as kind of like the D&D crowd in the U.S. which is looked at rather askance.

Quick correction, the movie is "Densha Otoko"; densha = train and otoko = man so the title itself has nothing to do with "otaku" (though the character is an otaku, of course).
As for my own otakuness, I have quite a few manga in English & Japansese plus a ton of downloaded manga, but I'm not so into anime, don't have posters/plushies/figures, and don't cosplay. However, I am trying to learn Japanese primarily in order to read manga.

I am simply a regular person who reads both manga and watch anime.
I have a huge list of anime/manga that I have seen myself. I even keep them all on my external hard drive. I occasionally bored start reading them up again.
Sometimes I do delete mangas/animes just purely the sole reason of disliking it and a waste of space.
When I first started I used to be really addicted (2 years ago) and I would non-stop read for hours on end. Now I just read it regularly. I don't even remember the last time I came across a manga that I the entire day downloading it and reading it.
Just a hobby of sorts.

... Honestly, I'm a mix of the first two options.
I'd be a perfect candidate for the second if the "and" was an "or," though; I have over 500 manga, so... I think that qualifies as a library. ._.;

I watch anime cause American cartoons nowadays are terrible. I started reading manga to get a head start on the rest of everyone who watches anime, and found a whole new world.
So manga is equivalent to me watching tv... in some sort of vaguely related way...
