Do you like The Stooges or the MC5? You might like them if you like Aerosmith.

I like them both but I won't profess my undying love for them anytime soon.
Oddly enough I'm not reminded of Aerosmith at all.

Led Zeppelin wins. They win so much that rather than justifying them I'm going to justify why other top choices don't beat them (in no real order):

The Beatles: The only reason they don't beat Zeppelin is because this is Rock Bands and most of their appeal came in the form of Pop or Pop Rock... it's not really the same.

Black Sabbath: They're probably as, if not more, influential but they're were less successful and less talented.

Nirvana: They ended too young. It's hard to really know if they could pull off a 2nd Nevermind.

Jimi Hendrix: The question is best bands, and Hendrix, though a great artiest, overshadows his band. I mean it's ****ing called The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Guns N' Roses: Solid musically but as a band they were dysfunctional at best.

Rolling Stones: Far too many of their songs are complete suck. If we're talking best band then we need both a high number of hits and a high percentage.

Metallica: Metal is not Rock, it's Metal (dur). Also after losing Burton and Mustaine they became trash. I wouldn't even say they were ever the best metal band anyway, Iron Maiden probably holds that title.

[Insert Punk Band Here]: See above, replace "Metal" with "Punk" and add "sucks" where applicable.

Linkon Park: See above but also acknowledge that your ears are broken for even considering them. I feel the need to include them as a special case since they're used so often in AMVs.

Green Day: See Linkon Park but instead acknowledge that one day you won't be in Junior High anymore and will have to start liking good music. I feel the need to include them as a special case since they were actually mentioned in this topic and that offends me as a person.

Rush: If yoy meant "Best" as in "Most Talanted" as in "Most likely to be able to cover anything the above bands have played... and in most cases better." then Rush takes it easy.

Queen: Sadly they were actually an extremely great Rock Band but their best songs that actually "Rock" aren't widely knows and constantly get overshadowed by Bohemian Rhapsody (by the way it's not even in my top 5 Queen songs). Their Compilation Albums are generally vocalist heavy and completely exclude May's and Deacon's best work, Brighton Rock and Dragon Attack respectively.

How is Metallica metal and Black Sabbath rock? Metal is just rock music played faster. And they were always thrash, more so WITH Burton and Mustaine, seeing as Mustaine formed a BETTER thrash band when he left. And Black Sabbath is the greatest Metal band ever.

Black Flag doesn't suck, and Metallica was never remotely punk.

At least spell the band name right.

Agreed to a certain point, but you have to admit, Dookie and Insomniac were pretty good.

Yeah, they are great, but as far as musicianship, Dream Theater is better. And better is subjective. And Geddy Lee sounds like a woman.

I would say that their most popular song is We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions, seeing as it's played at nearly ever sporting event in North America.

I LOVE the Von Bondies!

Yeah I like them too but they have yet to prove that they can make more than one good album.

Forgot The New Pornographers, they are really good.

They are coming out with a new album this summer. TBH, Wolfmother is an epic album, every track on that album are beasts. Colossal, Apple Tree, Love Train, Where Eagles Have Been, take your pick.

Black Keys are better though.

I don't view Black Sabbath as metal if for no other reason than because they don't.

I haven't heard enough Black Flag to know, so I guess I'll exempt them.

Never, be glad I bothered to come even that close.

I too will admit I've found myself liking several Green Days songs... until I start listening to the lyrics.

Dream Theater is probably better than Rush, but they're not successful enough to justify ranking as the Best Rock band. I guess maybe what I mean is that on paper they're epic but they've yet to fully translate that. Of course Liquid Tension Experiment is better than Dream Theater anyway laugh . Also G3 is better than Liquid Tension Experiment and that Primus is better than G3 and that Rush is better than Primus.

Well, opinion is opinion. I strongly disagree. Without Black Sabbath, there would be no metal. And Motorhead, Judas Priest, and several others simply consider themselves rock and roll as well.

Black Flag has some incredibly creative riffs, but hardcore punk sounds way different than regular punk. Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, The Circle Jerks, all sound way different than regular punk acts like the Clash et. al.

And G3 isn't a band.

True Black Sabbath did in effect cause metal, but many of their songs are nothing even close to what people would call metal today. Jack the Stripper, The Wizzard, Wheels of Confusion, nothing like metal, I would also argue that songs like War Pigs and Iron Man aren't metal either.

The Wizard is more like a blues song, but Tony Iommi's tone defines the heavy metal tone. And if you want an analogous style, look at doom metal and sludge. Pantera, Down, Crowbar, and My Dying Bride have the same aesthetic to them. I disagree on War Pigs/Luke's Wall because of the chorus riff and the Luke's Wall riff and Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots, because of the Fairies wear boots riff.

Listen to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Paranoid, Death Mask/Into the Void, Black Sabbath, Nativity in Black, and Electric Funeral and tell me those are not metal songs.

either Led Zeppelin or The Who.

I think The Rolling Stones are kind of overrated. My sister absolutely loves them, but some of their songs, to be quite frank, suck. Even their best songs can't measure up to Led Zeppelin IMHO.

My favorite is actually "Dragonforce". It's hard and rockish, but not to the point where it becomes irritating.
