Atheism

Poll
What do you think about atheism?
Everyone should be an atheist. Religion is just keeping us down as an intellectual species.
I am an atheist, but not a fanatic. I don't try to persuade other people. I respect religion, and the people that follow it.
I'm not an atheist, but I respect atheism or whatever way of life you may have.
I'm not a fan of atheism. I truly believe there's a higher spiritual being around. Sounds a lot better than the universe coming into existence out of sheer luck.

Ok am I the only one who finds the first picture weird? Standart logic - we need prof we have prof, atheist logic we need prof, the religion can't give us prof, but atheism still is wrong. And no 2000 years old book is no a prof, I can give you 1000 year old book that states that children are stolen in the nights by evil woman who eat them, but somehow people don't think it's the truth anymore. Or better 6000 years old scriptures that point out completly different gods, what also seems to vanish from prof category.
Anyways there are too many crimes religions have commited, to have any kind of rights to talk about having one and true GOOD GOD.

Quote
Oh and those of you who are atheists should stop using the word "omg". It's not right for an atheist to use that word, isn't it?
I don't like people who betray their own beliefs.

Don't you feel like betreying your beliefs by celebrating Christmas? 24th december was centuries celebrated as a Roman festival for Saturn, an then due some godly coincidence Christians started celebrating Jesus birth at the very same date.

Yeah your right that pic is wierd, didnt look at it before you pointed it out to me.
One standard answer to that question many atheists would give is that its circular reasoning. "I know that god exists since a book says so, i know that book to be true since it says so in that book."
The whole pic was retarded.

Okay, finished? What did I say?

Tl;dr? Atheists can be just as bad.

How does the pic portray atheists? BAD.

To truly understand the nature of god all one must do is watch serial experiments lain and haruhi suzumiya no yuutsu. I am religious although I dont classify myself as christian or anything like that. I think what I am is closest to the base of buddhism. I believe in karma and reincarnation. If there is only one god (which I believe there are multiple or the gods in this world are like I mentioned above, lain and haruhi) I do not think She or He is perfect. No one not even god can be perfect. I respect everyones views and beliefs. I dont like religious zealots who try to make everyone believe in God or atheists who bash God and religion in general. No one should force their beliefs on other people

You are missing a category. I don't particulary respect religion. I honestly don't understand how anyone intelligent could be religious (That is not an insult. I know that there are many very intelligent religious people. I just genuinely dont understand religion). On the other hand, I am quite envious of people who are capable of belief in god. I wish I were religious, because I think that with a higher power and purpose I would be happier.

First in your post there is absolutly no word about the picture exept that it has bad spelling.
Second overaxaggerated facial expression, typical good example bad example, and quantity of text makes it kind of obvious that Atheist is supposed to be wrong. Not even talking about, that the religous guy can't really be called over zealos, in contrast to your post were you state that atheists are as over zealos. In short your post doesn't realy help at all in expresing the thought of picture (whatever it is).

Oh goody, a topic where I can put my philosphy classes to good use.
Let me start with saying I picked the first choice, because I absolutely hate religions (with the exception of budhism, which isn't really a religion, more of a life philosophy)
I could write a 30 page essay as to why I hate religion, but I'll refrain from that. Instead let me ask this question: what real good has modern religion brought to our society?
At most you could say it has given us a fixed moral system, and a pretty primitive one at that, since the ones from budhism and hinduism are far superior.
Modern religions have given us witch hunts, the inquisition, ethnic cleansings, terrorism, crusades, a whole bunch of wars (although money, power and land are also influences here, but religion is often used as an excuse), female oppression, apartheid and a bunch of other stuff.
But what really irks me is what happened 2000 years ago.
I mean the time of the ancient greeks and roman empire.
At the time, those were the pinnacle of human civilisation. Technologically, philosophically and socially unmatched, with democracy and all. (though the chinese were doing pretty good too I believe)
It was a great society with some of the greatest minds in history.
the only problem they had was that they didn't have an organised moral system, or any fixed morals at all really.
Cue jews and christians. They introduce their beliefs and moral structure. A few centuries later we go from a highly developed society and great academic freedom, to the dark ages. A time with no technological or philosophical advances and a society dominated by religious doctrines and dogmas, poverty and ignorance.
Then we needed a reneissance to get back to where we were with the greeks and romans. At this time religion was a very strong opposing force to any and all progress. Let's not forget that every major player in the reneissance was considered a heretic at some point or some level. Hell, Da Vinci was gay, you couldn't get more heretical than that.
And even now religion isn't cooperating, with their bitching about stemcell research, the pope dismissing use of condoms and so on and so forth.
Religion seems to wants to keep us ignorant. Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat from the tree of knowledge after all.

Edit: wow, that a was a bit more than planned. And I even wanted to add a little extra something. maybe at some other point.

The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one.

Obligatory thread pic. (Excuse the bad spelling, haha~)

So, any thoughts?

In my opinion, atheists can be just as worse as religious zealots. roll eyes Atheists deny the existence of a god just as strong as religious people accept the existence of a god.

Have to say that i disagree with you.
I have atheist friend and she just didn't want to belong to church, but still believe's in some point's.
And i'm not atheist, but i don't strongly accept the existence of a god.
I believe he is, but really not strongly.
I think you have put two extreme's here.

And in my opinion people can be whatever they like. It's their choice's and other people doesn't have the right to say that they cannot be.

Actually this is false, the overwhelming majority of atheists are agnostic atheists, they dont believe in god since they havent seen any evidence for one. However they dont claim to know for certain a god doesnt exist. Just like they dont claim for certain unicorns dont exist, since thats a ridiculous position to take.

And i actually consider religious zealots way worse, atheists atleast dont fly planes into buildings because of their lack of belief in a god.

"Bobbism: A very common religion, shared by those who do not believe in Bob. Only those who believe Bob is God are not Bobbists. Thus, we are all Bobbists, and thus we all share harmoniously in the same religion."

there, religion problems solved.

How can not strongly believe in god? there are three options. You don't believe there is a god, you don't know for certain wether or not there is a god, or you believe in god.
You may follow a belief structure strictly or not, ut that's different.

And by the way. So many people say agnostic atheïsm is the idea that they don't know for certain if there is a god. This is wrong.
Agnostic atheism is the philosophical view that any matter in metaphysics can neither be proven nor disproven. Which is a bit broader actually.
So basically they are the Switzerland of metaphysics.

And to the guy who mentioned Bohr and Einstein being religious. They were actually agnostic and did not follow any religious view, but still believed in some form of a god.`

@icabobsavage
You are absolutely right. Now if we spread this word of genius around the globe we will have world peace for all eternity.
Or at least untill the aliens get here.

I'm athiest and then I'm not. I believe in God to some extent but I do respect people's religion. My cousins are true fanatics or to me it seems they forced this for some reason I wish to know. Sometimes it bothers me but I don't let it affect me biggrin

Those who say atheism is a belief, instantly get dropped from the list of candidates for serious discussion, as they have a poor grasp of the scientific method and logic in general... Furthermore they would be futile to try and convince otherwise since they will not change their mind because of their "beliefs".

There is a flowchart that accurately depicts the difference between faith and science... ah here it is http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9168/20070115sciencevsfa ith.png

As cool as some of the supernatural things from stories being true would be...
But liking something does not make it true.

We don't really need an invisible sky father.
The world is pretty awesome as is.

This is why I disrespect religion... because it shits on everything I love. It fills people with self-loathing and denial of life... All we are supposed to do our lives is make it so that our promised after-life is great. I like my current one and there is nothing wrong with that.

It is better to rely on expectations based on prior observations, and your own abilities to get things done, than flimsy things such as hope, faith or beliefs, which are nothing more than comfort.

im not an atheist. i have friends who are.

even tho i am a very debate loving person
i believe in god just becuz it feels better to believe in.
studies show people with religion live longer. so i find that reasonable

if anybody asks me who is go where is god.
why do people die?

in my opinion god is love. if you believe in love you believe in god.

i don't necessarily go by the bible. i just know i have felt love. so thats what i choose to believe.

i don't know why people die. but i believe everything happens for a reason.
Einstein scientifically proved that the soul must go somewhere when humans die. it can not vanish or fade away.
so therefore i am open minded to heaven and reincarnation.
i don't think heaven is bs. because i have heard so many stories about people almost dying. seeing a light they must walk into heard stories of angels and so on.
also i believe demons exist because of i've heard plenty of stories about demons possessing people and making them do inhumane things also speaking other languages and even saying they are from hell.
you might say well, than i guess aliens exist too and santa too.

who knows if aliens exist. who am i to say they don't. i have seen documentaries on the history channel about if it was possible, seams reasonable to me.
also santa does not exist because i actually read in an encyclopedia that he was created in an advertisement to increase the industrys profit.

by the way in that link bible was spelled wrong

And stop abusing Einstein.

"Thus I came...to a deep religiosity, which, however, reached an abrupt end at the age of 12. Through the reading of popular scientific books I soon reached a conviction that much in the stories of the Bible could not be true....Suspicion against every kind of authority grew out of this experience...an attitude which has never left me."
