I'm not sure if I've suggested something similar before, buy anyway...

My suggestion is simple: add the tag "inactive" or something to a manga that hasn't had a release from a scanlation group in 3 months.

It's "inactive" because it doesn't necessarily mean that it's dropped, just maybe not the priority for the group right now thus inactive.
I thought 3 months is a good time frame but maybe you guys have a better suggestion?

I think that 6 months is a better time period to say whether a manga is 'inactive' or not. And well, that could be nifty... but not one of the top priorities around here.

I don't think that's a good idea. Some series haven't had releases for more than a year two at max, but I'm not sure you can call that being inactive when most groups I know work on other projects. If there's going to be a time limit maybe 6-8 months, like I said different groups work on different projects not just one you can't really expect groups to finish a whole project within such a small time, I say this cause I know how much work it takes to make a new release possible especially if you consider how long a project is which varies.

How exactly would this be any better than simply looking at the time from the latest release? (Which is already available.) That way you can decide for yourself whether you consider it inactive or not.

I am, for instance, absolutely sure that my definition of inactive differs greatly from the definition of someone who only reads shounen from weekly mags. It also depends on the manga. If there's a whole year between the publication of new volumes, you can hardly say it's inactive just because it's impossible to translate any further.

So anyway, there are too many ways this can fail, and you can already solve the "problem" by using your brain a little.

Maybe an icon which changes over time, like if its inactive for 3 months a green one, 6 months yellow and a red one if it hasn't been updated in a year.

The icon thing sounds nice. (if it to be when you search for manga).
Since you can just look at the number of days since the last release.

Sounds like a good idea when you first think about it, but upon thinking more about it you'll realize, why?

Just because someone hasn't scanlated a chapter of something in age it should now be clearly labeled as such instead of just looking at the last release date? (It even has the days in brackets now).

Now what about series that never had any releases in the first place?

The inactivity is already assigned to scanlation groups since they're the ones controlling whether which series becomes "inactive", not the manga series itself.

It sounds like something interesting at first thought, but it's not as necessary as it seems.

Well, I just don't think it's helpful enough.

What you actually want to know is whether a new chapter/volume of the manga is likely to come out any time soon or not. Which means the time from the latest release is a bad indicator, on its own. If you combine something like average frequency and time from latest release, that would work slightly better. Still not anywhere near good, but better. Or, you can just take a quick peek under Latest Release(s) and make your own guess, which will probably be better than a computer could manage by purely statistical methods.

And in the end, of course, all this will be completely and utterly moot until the chapter actually comes out.

No offense, but why can't people just do the little research to see how recent the last scanlation was? Some practically want the updated handed to them, by the sound of it...

Yeah, why would you want a list anyway? Just remember every release. Or do you want everything handed to you on a silver plate?

The reason for my suggestion is to easier sort your manga, perhaps move all the "inactive" manga to the "on hold" list. Right now my reading list has a ton (like 100+) "inactive" manga, and somehow it doesn't fit in.
