This manga was fantastic, its was entertaining, art was top notch and it was informative about a sport id never played before and actually made it interesting. i really didnt think a manga about 'go' would be interesting but im plesantly surprised.
I have few complaints, I wanted Sai to come back but in a way it seemed necessary for him to go for hikaru to progress, but the artist didnt make it seem like he really did like he lost his last game of the entire manga ... like come on, in reality i think he should of got a title before the manga ended, or the manga should of at least ending on an epic match against akira with hikaru taking the win.
but all and all i loved it, and recommend the read to all.
i would of given it a 10 but the ending made it a 9

This manga is way too awesome! It makes go fun for those who may not even know what it is and teaches lots of facts while creating a fun and professional imaging! There is also just the right touch of fiction mixed in with the story and teary scenes seems more natural than any of the mangas i've ever read!
Lots of people may have known that the ending really didn't live up to the whole story and it's kind of true =.=''' Since production ended it suddenly, the ending seemed very sudden even though they did add a summer special... IF only they had more chapters to end it *A*
Especially knowing that the artist also drew death note ect, it's something to really look forward to

I love the Hikaru no Go manga, the anime isn't too shabby itself. I wasn't quite hooked by the storyline either but since it was so highly recommended I had to try it myself.
The thing that makes this different from other Shounen manga is definitely the progress Hikaru makes as the manga continues on. It's easy to relate to him because of his stubbornness, his fear of losing, his cowardice and then seeing him overcome all of it.
I really love Hikaru and Akira's rivalry though. It's intense where you're not sure who exactly is going to win, which is what makes it a rivalry. In the Shounen I've read, the main characters with rivals aren't usually rivalries in the first place. (i.e Naruto where Sasuke pretty much shows him up all the time).
What made the manga great to utterly amazing is definitely Sai. He made the manga funny, interesting, intense and absolutely heartbreaking (in that good way).
I recommend this manga for everyone.

I have to agree with the "supposed minority" that liked the way the author ended this fantastic series. Sai's departure was depressing, but ultimately necessary. A "Coward's Ending?" the extension beyond Akira VS Hikaru is internationalization, and passing the love of the game beyond nationalities. Call it fancy marketing or foreign-fan service, I would prefer to call it a pure reflection of the author's hopes for the game.
The ending is perfect...

...Just like everything else in this manga. It's all faithful to the nuance and the soul of this manga, which is full of love for Go and the strong hope and belief that this traditional game will survive, progress, and be passed along to the next generation. With this in mind I really think it has the most perfect ending and turns of events. Many times when something ultimate is reached then it's done, can only decline or disappear instead of progressing. Everyone including Sai had their own roles to play for the sake of Go, for their love for it. Not that I didn't shed sad tears when you-know-what happened, bah. Ooops you don't know? Then nothing happened, really. Just go ahead and read this manga.
I love this manga for its characters' strong passion for Go, especially Sai's and Akira's, and how they both triggered the same passion in Hikaru. Also for its powerful story telling and wonderful, wonderful art. This manga is not overrated just like it was not overdone. It's really a fine manga, so very well done. It's easy to read and understand, it doesn't require much brainpower or knowledge to enjoy, and the fact that it's very very easy to follow shows the complexity and the effort given in its process of creation.
It's a beautiful, entertaining read. If you miss any of the 23 (yes, all 23) volumes then you're definitely missing something important. Point is, if you want to read then read them all. I assure you that you won't be disappointed and will appreciate this title deeply. ...Unless, of course, you have a taste that's very different from mine.

Amazing, amazing series. Except for the ending. (As, like, 99.9% of all other readers have said). Just read until you get to the ending and skip it, as several others have suggested. The description of this series sounds so stupid (a game about chinese chess) but my goodness can the mangaka make it exciting! The art rules so much, and the growth of the characters throughout the series is incredible.

As every sane person on this earth who has read this manga agrees, the ending is s**t. But everything else rocks, so just read until the second last volume and then STOP unless you want to have that horrible aftertaste in your mouth forever.

Yes I too at first did not like the ending! After 10 mins of coming off the high I had from the ending and the disappointment that it had ended; I quickly loved the resolution. I like jumping into peoples lives and jumping out of them again. Yeah I would love to see more from the authors POV but I can imagine their lives just fine as well. It's not like we left in the middle of anything huge... and some of it was kind of wrapped up in side stories.
I didn't really like the thing with Sai at first either... but it is Hikaru no Go (Hikaru's Go) not Sai no Go. Of course we could all tell where it was headed!
I rarely read anything over again... read it once know it all... I will always, always, always love Hikaru no Go. ;) I constantly watch it and read it over and over, not just the great Go board scenes that make my heart race, but even the in between scenes that develop the characters! (Ok so I'm just a bit obsessed with Go!!!)

I started reading this manga about 4-5 years ago... and I recently watched the anime and re-read the manga... and have been re-reading/watching all the important matches over and over again. I love how the characters grow and how each match has its purpose... A lot of people were disappointed with the ending, and I guess I was too at first, but the second time around it grew on me and I realize that it's satisfying to know that the characters will continue to grow beyond what's been told. I suppose the ending was more of a beginning than anything . You can imagine whats to happen for the decades to come~ Also what happened to Sai is an important part of the manga. It's sad, but I think it was necessary for the development of the story and characters.
I'm rating this as a 10 because it's very rare for me to want to re-read something so much and think about what happens after the story ends. I wish there was even more of this manga to read .
p.s. the amazing art helps a lot too.

I loved this manga. But I was deeply dissapointed that sai never came back and the ending was terrible. I also didnt like that you see sai less and less as the manga progresses. Overall though, I loved it. I may not know how to play, but the intensity, seriousness, and comedy fit really well together. A really good read!
