Deceptively Dull

It’s a (very) little better executed than most, but it’s really just the same old “girl falls in love with unattainable bad boy” shoujo story. Some possiblly interesting elements like the bad boy actually being pretty bad and the heroine's serious sexual problem don't go anywhere and there's some pretty strange and ineffective twists and a few too many cliches.

While it spends most its time as a dedicated romantic drama, it also gives time to a focus on make-up artistry. A lot of series use this kind of gimmicky and focus on an art, sport, or craft, and it can be made to work, but not when it gets so little time to unfold and suddenly takes over from straughtforward drama.

Really nothing but a dressed-up old dog.

I have to agree with the last comment. The art was the best this about this manga. The characters were terrible the entire time. The guy was manly, but he had a very strong girlish side of him, with his make-up thing, which totally threw me off. And then the girl had a problem with sex, but she liked it? I didn't really get that.... I don't get why the guy was supposed to be soo0o0o0o incredibly manly, but had the most girlish dream in the world. So the guy was a huge grizzly bear on the outside, ,but a soft teddy bear on the inside? SO in conclusion I thought that there were some ok moments in this manga, but overall this was terrible. The girl was annoying and the guy was girly. Weird......

Pretty art, but that's about it. One of the most unrealistic and dumb stories I've read in ages. You'd be better off reading something else, unless you're just in for the few sex scenes depicted. ;p

I usually like Kayono's artwork, but her stories are rarely worthwhile. They move in together and have sex. That's all I remember of this manga, and all you really need to know. >_>;;

The heroine is too stupid. I can't stand how Kayono portrays her - a girl who's dated 10 guys, and had sex with all of them, when she's only 16, a girl who falls in love WAY too fast, and a girl who gets horny at a pen drop. Even Shinjo Mayu-sensei and Minami Kanan-sensei build up to it before they fall in love (ridiculously). Unfortuneatly, in this manga, it goes something like this: I sat next to you and stole your cellphone, and man, that sex-recording was HOT. I LOVE YOU! - yes, yes, it went something like this.

The only redeeming feature of the manga was the art. The male lead was beautiful, drawn very nicely, as well as the female lead, and that gave me my whole 2.8 rating. Oh, and did I mention the gangster wants to be a make-up artist? Yeah - it's that kind of manga.

Rubbish Heroine

The heroine of this manga seems to be the main failing so far (i've only read the first volume)
I can feel absolutely no sympathy for her - so therefore the fact that she's slept with 9 guys just makes her look like a complete slut rather than a girl stuck in a rough life.

I wish she'd gone for the best friend instead - he looks such a nice guy and still very hot.

She makes so many stupid mistakes with the male lead - and its cringe worthy her immature attitude towards him.

This gets a four purely for the male lead, who is absolutely gorgeous and really well done. I like the violent ones, and he had that cool but caring edge as a gang leader.
Although... I laughed hysterically for ten minutes when I found out his dream was to become a makeup artist.

I was gonna give this a 4 just b/c it was somewhat entertaining at certain points (although some those those points were quickly and promptly ignored within the following pages).

It follows the standard Kayono mold: Super cool, tough guy happens to be a softy underneath and seems like he's just using the heroine for ulterior motives. Also did I mention that despite the physical and mental abuse the delinquent/rebellious heroine will follow said guy around like a hungry stray cat.

*sigh*...Now I've read works by Shinjo and Minami and they follow the exact format almost exactly, yet Lovenista and Royal Seventeen make them look like Shakespeare or Edgar Allen Poe. The girl in this story is completely ruled by her hormones she's had nine previous boyfriends (ten if you include the guy she gave her virginity to) and I'm guessing she had sex w/ all of them since she says that was their main reason for breaking up. Did I also mention that she's only 16 yrs. old? I'm no prude but 10 guys before you're old enough to legally vote, drink, or smoke is overdoing it a little.

*sigh*... I don't wanna post spoilers so I'll stop before I get too carried away. The funny thing is the heroine is only a small part of the problem. The plot jumps around so much that by the time you get to far enough to know a little of what's really going on, you don't really care anymore.

I was originally going to give this a 2 or a 3 since I quite like the art, but decided I just couldn't do it since a 2 or a 3 truly doesn't reflect how utterly inept this work is. To put it in perspective: Lovenista reads like a 12 year-old's first R-rated fanfic ("OMG read & review otherwise I won't write moooooore!") Characterization? There is none. A coherent plot? Kayono does not know the meaning of this "plot" you speak of. Sexual situations which have an ounce of realism? Dialogue that isn't hopelessly corny? Decent pacing which features story developments that don't come out of nowhere? Nope, nope, and nope.

You want an example of the kind of thing I'm talking about? All right, let's look at the first meeting of our cute couple: The male lead is a delinquent known and feared by all (him and his gang carry knives and aren't afraid to cut you!), yet one day when he sits down next to the female main character, she finds herself fantasizing about his hands and getting all aroused by him. Her thought process at that moment is literally something like this: "Everyone knows he's fathered a bunch of illegitimate children, and yet he's still popular with girls. That must mean he's good in bed! I bet he could make me feel good too! I'm in love with him!" Yes, it's literally that fast. And yes, she's literally that dumb. Our future-cosmetologist / delinquent hero decides right then and there that she is a legendary "skin beauty" and at their very next meeting, he asks her to move in with him so that he can do her makeup for her every morning. Of course she accepts. (Because she's in love with him! And just wants to be near him!) The stupid/distasteful plot developments just come fast and furious after that (check out some of the other reviewers' comments to get a taste of what's in store.)

Truly it astounds me that not only does Kayono continue to get work as a professional mangaka, but also that she's actually got a following. It's not just this title, she's consistently bad. Is it just her ability to draw a bishonen? If that's all, I'd say go ogle an Abercrombie catelogue and then go read something decent. This woman doesn't deserve a cent of your money or a second of your time.
