I really liked this, but frankly, the ending sucked.
Yeah. That's my spiel. I liked it and you will probably love this, but be prepared.

I mean, it's implied that Mimori and Matsuri are reunited, but it doesn't say how. Mimori is still an omamori, so he'll be owned by someone else since he can't belong to Matsuri, so how are they together? Honestly, I think it would have been wayyyy cuter if Mimori wished to be human so he could be with her. Wishing for her to stop crying is sweet, but, frankly, a waste of a perfectly good wish that, as far as we know, could be anything, especially considering pretty much the only barrier between them was that he wasn't human. :/

I'm kind of surprised at the bad/mixed reviews this manga got. I mean Matsuri actually does something. Sure, she never develops her power, or actively seeks out ways to help Mimori, so she never grows as a priestess, but this manga is not really about that. I thought Mimori's character growth was good and Matsuri was a good female lead. Her naivety was tempered by a more down-to-earth aspect to her character. She does rely on Mimori, but not overly so and is generally not annoying.
This manga is light and fluffy, there's nothing dark or sinister
It follows the manga's overall feeling, however, and anything darker wouldn't have fit. Even the rivalry between the leads is all in goodness.

even the deaths of the omamori are fluffy - they return to the cycle so they can eventually be omamori again. And heck, the ending? Passing the test means pursuing the righteous path and withdrawing from the competition? Nothing but fluff.

Better than most Shoujo mangas

Now, where do I start? Omamori no Kamisama is a mixed bag for me, but then again, I’m not much of a Shoujo fan, I just happened to have a thing for romance and small chibi guys with long hair. Anyway, in this manga, you should expect typical Shoujo clichés- a big turn off for me, but then again it’s Shoujo so I tried to dismiss it. But of course I could only read until the third chapter, since this manga was seriously not very good in my opinion. I just skipped to the ending so I could see what would happen between the two main characters. In short, I just read a bunch of clichés and a half-Mary-Sue all merged in one. The art is pretty good though- better than some other Shoujo mangas I’ve read since it doesn’t have those generic Shoujo eyes that take up half of their faces. All in all, this manga is better than most Shoujo mangas out there (but that doesn't mean it's that good) so I’d give this a seven. However, if your one of those big Shoujo fans, then this would be at least an eight.

I'll admit I wasn't all that impressed when I first started this series. The plot tastes familiar: Girl gets a magical friend to stand by her through the everyday trials of being a teenage girl torn between duty and desire. Nothing stood out to me at first. My weakness for little companions that turn into cute boys when the heroine needs saving is the only thing that kept me coming back. Then suddenly I found myself thinking about the characters outside of the reading... Then I started rereading chapters... Before I knew it, I was waiting for it to update as eagerly as any of my top series.
It's. Just. So. Cute.
Ahh, the cuteness of this series! The mangaka draws draws such darling faces, expressions, and chibis. Every time I see Mimori I can't help but smile. I love his character design, and all the other Omamoris' designs for that matter. Their hair and robes. Mimori's sleeves and pom pom buttons! But that's not all that's cute about him. He has such a sweet personality. He's kind, optimistic, and energetic, but becomes protective and epic when he goes big to save Matsuri. He really loves and cherishes her. (I'm pretty sure his wish is for her to fall in love with him or something to that effect). In my opinion, Matsuri is a notch above your typical shoujo heroine. She's cute and sweet, yes, but also strong, practical, and willful.
If you're looking for a feel-good "uwaaa!" series with majorly cute art, this is definitely the manga for you. I'm sure by the time you finish you'll want an Omamori of your own as much as I do!
