Underwhelming

A historical manga following the creation of the world famous Cup Noodles that's played straight and condensed heavily into 1 volume. At the costs of being short, the manga suffers from any sense of tension and drama (which I'm sure was present during the making of the Cup Noodle given that Nissin was undergoing financial struggles; so we're told).

Character introductions occur outside the actual story (in character introduction pages) and we learn little of them aside from what we're told (in those introduction pages). Tension and drama are but bullet points as we move at a brisk pace from the inception of Cup Noodle to it's eventual production and selling.

Everything in the manga suffers from an underdeveloped sense of narrative tension (we know Cup Noodles are in instant hit so the conclusion is not so much of a surprise; what we're interested in is the story of it's creation and all the drama and tension that comes with the making of a new product). We're told Nissin is suffering financial loses, that Cup Noodles is an outrageous idea, and that this is an all-or-nothing bet by the director of Nissin that could end badly (how?) yet we don't see this in the character's actions. At most we get a half-hearted response from the characters which make us feel that the problem isn't as bad as the mangaka makes it seem.

Instead of the dramatic story we're promised we get a series of bullet points and nods to literal who's (one of the researcher's wife is introduce as being part of Cup Noodle's creation by aiding her husband with bite-sized meals after coming from work from taste testing noodles and while I'm sure she helped him out when he was struggling with constant failure, the impact of this isn't felt; another is a production line manager whose contribution to the production of Cup Noodles is using more oil to heat the noodles but again, this quickly mentioned, applauded, and moved on and we fail to feel the impact, if there was any, of his contribution).

Overall an underwhelming manga. Makes me wonder if this was requested by Nissin as marketing promotion for their product.
