Behavior and motives of characters are unrealistic. Hikkomori is supposedly pretty common in japan and a serious problem. Instead of addressing that, the mangaka chose to go down the romance path. I would have to liked to see the hikkomori issue explored more like in NHK. The romance between the characters was really forced, almost made me puke. The ending was so rushed like the mangaka got bored and went back to Gantz.

the whole manga was quite deep, and heartbreaking, i am not happy with ending, but that is something i can't change...I wish that they would be together
Art is quite good, characters too, Shintarou is quite crybaby, story progressed at the end too quickly in my opinion

Spoiler (highlight to view)
the whole story is about a guy staying inside his room for 15 years after the death of his mom.

sum: the new mom tries to help him in the first 2 vols in her own way but ended up doing the same thing his father was doing, basically enabling him to become dependent on her while doing the same thing over n over again. the professional hinted that she must cut him loose to help him help himself. vol 3 was all about her making a good last memory for her and him.

ending: he is the guy talking to the homeless old man. the woman that told him about a girl saying to take good care of him is his wife, the kid at the end is probably his. basically, he is leading a good life only a few years after she left him ( you can tell how many years judging by the size of the kid calling him dad).

that is the ending. I wish the ending was that they got back together!!! I kinda wish for that, but oh well, it was still a good ending.

Utter failure. I guess u can find the ending touching but it was rather quaint and rushed in my opinion. I also thought the story didn't flow as well as it could have. volume three was a train wreck, whether it was because the translations were bad or it was actually the authors fault for getting lazy, it was confusing in a lot of places. I picked up the japanese volume to read and trust me, its not a culture barrier or anything like that that made the ending difficult.... it was just poorly written and executed -_-.

leaves sour taste

First and most important - the ending was very unpleasant and left a sour taste after that. I feel very sorry for Haruka. Not to speak of all the unrealistic stuff in this manga too, and on top of that it is not even good unrealistic - it's bad. There was even no romance in the whole thing, as you will come to realize after the ending. A poor try by the author to solve the hikikomori issue. I don't want to continue this review. No positive things to say, apart from the fact it was emotional, so it leaves an impact, unlike a lot of other average manga.

Bit unusual but touching

The series was good but not the best. It was quite unusual but touching. Most people say its quite unrealistic (I agree Haruka liking and marrying Shintarou's father was unrealistic), but I think the majority is realistic as most seinen manga should.

This especially applies to the ending;
Spoiler (highlight to view)
you would like Shintarou to end up with Haruka (I did) but considering the mangaka trying to keep it close to reality, and I supposed Haruka's "duty" as a mother and wife, the ending is fine and very good.

But I suppose you have to consider
Spoiler (highlight to view)
the mangaka's possible intention to create a character like Haruka who is understanding and caring, and able to pull Shintarou back into society and make him act independently. Consider the title also. Translated it means "maternal feelings". I supposed the crux of the manga is, quoting a new Shintarou, "you may not believe this, but people can change".

The story was weird but made sense and was heartfelt. A good manga with a touching ending; worth the read. =)

This is not even an incest

First, they are not blood related so this is not incest
Second, Incent is involved with blood related family which they are not.
Third, the relationship between the father and the girl he married was Asexuality.
Fourth, people who think this is sick are d***asses
Fifth, the story is getting more interested at the end of chapter 24.
Finally, this is an awesome, well made manga! GO OKU Hiroya!!
