The Classic BL Story Rebirth: What Makes it Fail or Win?
by MightyMaeve

The story was tired, yes, but that wasn't what made it fail in my opinion, because there are tons of amazingly 'tired,' classic story lines in the BL genre that are rebirthed with explosively enjoyable sensations and stimulating psychological.

This one was great for comparing features of story plotting and writing and art placement and expressions for what works and what doesn't work as far as impact to readers.

A King's Lesson evoked such unaffected feelings while I read it. Maybe it's the other missing factors, like snappy dialogue, believable, developed character struggles and accomplishments? I just didn't really care about this story.

Spoiler:

And the supposed climax with the best friend? There is minimal to zero angst or exploration of the young man and his dynamic between his long-time best friend that is the uke and himself and his antagonistic relationship with the King. According to the publishers blurb, the reader is lead to believe he is the climatic element. Which he isn't. There really is a lack of climax in this story.

The main seme character fell flat and one-dimensional. His 'growth' seemed phoney and forced. The violence of the story didn't align in gravity with the three main character's responses fully. It was over before it was even begun to be addressed. And that was a problem in itself: the fact that there was a half start at addressing it, and then *poof* all was sunshiney. It was like the character's had suddenly all been transformed and resolutions delivered in surprise grab bags.

A bit painful to read

The main characters are a bit flat and not very likable. Sui has a fixation on Daira that at times becomes annoying, and it's hard to empathize with him since his infatuation towards Daira seems to come out from thin air. Daira is also a flat and abrasive character, the phrase "smart moron" kept coming to mind while I read the manga. The only redeeming quality of the manga would be Sosuke, but he ended up being just a supporting character.
Again there's the over used theme of the uke(idiot) being raped by a jealous(moronic) seme and still taking pity on and loving his rapist.

Read it if you have nothing better to do.

I think most people will be upset with who Sui chooses in the end. (spoiler) its true that Sosuke is the wiser choice he is very sweet and caring, and Daira did rape Sui. but since the beginning of the manga Daira was affected by Sui, and Daira comes off as a cold unemotional machine at first, Sui awakens emotions in him, and i love how we get glimpses into Daira's thoughts. i think sui can give the Daira some warmth he touches his heart i believe that he can make him into a better man, he needs Sui more than sou does. i do think this manga needed more length to show Daira's awakening emotions the ending was too rushed. the two guys are super handsome but the uke is too girly. besides that it was an interesting story.

Honestly, as much as I put off these authors their manga is extremely steamy to read. Extremely relatable feminine uke who are super comfortable with their sexuality/sexual and really sensual dominant semes making for some quality smut even for a default BL pairing. The sex is always too hot to read with Kurenai Mitsuba at the drawing table and Sano Masaki's writing is just so porny and flowery at the same time. Its like everything I liked about Level C's anime adaptation but more of it. Really wish more of their books get translated and someone picks up Level Cs manga again its so good.

Also idk where people get 'the seme is so rapey" from this is like mild dubcon if even that really. There's so much worse shojo smut out there.

Could have been better....

What I really hate about this manga is Sui has such a low self esteem. The story should have been such that, even if he is Daiki's fan, he should also try to protect his self dignity when he is criticized in such a harsh way, he could also talk back. But he quietly excepted and believed every insult by Daiki. Daiki told Sui that he is pathetic, Sui started seeing himself that way, he could have been a bit defiant. His personality could have been more attractive, he was a bit more confident and strong willed. He could have realized that even though a genius, Daiki has a horrible personality. \

Here, Sui's character could have been special and better highlighted, if he was straightforward like Sou. But he is like any other side character who are Daiki's diehard fans, only sees him a genius, not a normal boy. Thus, such a cold personality, he ignored all the attention, got used to it. It's also unfair that Sou is only a supporting person here, since he is the only one who talked to Daiki normally and doesn't fangasm around him.

I had a hard time bringing myself to finish this.
The only likeable character is the childhood friend. Both the

rapist seme
and the extreme doormat uke are highly annoying and the story is bland.
Forgettable, not recommended.
