Born into a shamanic family, Sunbi has inherited the power to see and communicate with spirits from her grandmother, a noted shaman and savior of the little fishing village in the South Sea that they live in. As a young child, Sunbi can see the supernatural, such as a fraudulent shaman being thrashed by a dragon of the deep. Because she does not understand that none of her schoolmates can see such things, she becomes feared and alienated. Her powers make her the amorous target of hedonistic demons even when she is but a child.

Rich in mythology and folklore, Dobeki bride is one of the few which successfully marries both modern and old in a exquisite and fascinating tale. Definitely recommended for those seeking an interesting series steeped in supernatural fantasy. Also highly recommended is Hyakki Yakoushou, its' Japanese counterpart which is just as excellent.

Really good! far better than I thought, actually. I didn't know what I was expecting originally, perhaps something along the lines of 'bride of the water god'. However, I got quite a suprise when I started reading and noted that it had more of a 'Death Note' feel. Not that the plots are similar in many ways, but the story is dark, almost depressingly so.
Nonetheless, the atmosphere is what makes Dokebi Bride unique. It's not often I come across a shoujo with this kind of feel to it. On top of this, the art work is so NOT shoujo-like. I'm not sure how else to describe it, but I would call the art work more 'shounen-like' than shoujo. There are no big- eyed shoujo girls with magical powers swinging their wands along with a chant (yipee!).
Lastly, the characters in Dokebi Bride are just awesome! You really get a sense of their personalities, particularly with Sunbi. I have to admit, her cold and almost spoilt personality almost turned me off, but after a while I really get the feeling of why she acts the way she does. As the story progresses, you really can see the the burden of not only her past, but also her powers, and the horrifying things she sees that others can't.
hmmmm... I ranted again, as I tend to do with stories I really like. I was really bored on the day I downloaded this and read it, and boy, I am so glad I did!. Highly recommended!

So I reread this since it was on my unfinished but loved list, but I don't know if I would recommend this to the general reader. The way it got cut short left me very annoyed and as someone else mentioned a new possible love interest gets introduced but they never actually meet until the last page of vol 6 <- where the story was axed.
However, the story was very interesting despite the lack of romance (its not a tag so don't expect anything, though people do have crushes), and it was obvious there was some serious thought and research put in by the author. This is also another thing I feel mixed about as sometimes there were paragraph after paragraph of explanation that I often skipped.
However the female lead is a winner, she is serious, bold and vulnerable. She doesn't get good grades but nobody could ever call her stupid. She's actually the opposite of your typical shoujo manga heroine. There was always a sense of unhappiness about Sunbi so I wished the author had better sense and gave her the clear well well tied together ending she deserved.
End thoughts: If you enjoy supernatural stories, well thought out world building, a story that takes it self seriously despite the random bits of humour, and an excellent female lead you will like this. I especially enjoyed how the theme was Korean mysticism, as it's rarely done.

I declare this to be the best Korean manga i ever read! and i read alot, The character depth is just awesome, the plot will pull you right in, the storyline is getting batter as you read more, the art isn't your usual shoujo style it's even better! i bought the first 5 volumes with the risk that this might suck but it's really great and i love it <3

lialah's comment on the series covered a lot of the things I wanted to say about this manga. Unlike 99% of shoujo manga, this doesn't have a romance element. You really just follow Sunbi and her encounters with the demons and the people, whose lives her and her powers had inadvertently changed. The manga is great at depict human motions and doesn't shy away from depicting some of the darker ones. I had teared up pretty bad in some of the chapters. I'm giving it a 8.5 rating because 1. the art wasn't really my taste 2. there was too much text in the beginning volumes and 3. though it was a page-turner, the manga doesn't make me salivate for the next volume.
