Longer would've been better

Personally, I think this one shot would have been better had it been longer. The plot is too complex to be done well AND resolved well within only one chapter. Even a single volume would have been more satisfactory.
The story was more-or-less thrown onto 50 pages and there is no aspect of it that was explored or explained very well. Unless you can attach yourself to the story and the characters in an extremely short amount of time, this one shot will surely leave you with (at least traces of) disappointment.
That being said…
Now don't get me wrong!!! It is definitely worth a read!! It's just... had it been longer, I would have been MUCH more satisfied.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Rio obviously knows how to use his shadow power to a great extent since he IS recognized by both his teacher and his peers but he also knows the dangers of his ability so he doesn't use it for fear he will unintentionally hurt innocents. Even if by doing so he is ridiculed by some (i.e.: that Rain bastard) he doesn't falter.
Even though the characters are not explained and there is little background info, the characters' motives are revealed implicitly through their actions and reactions which I rather enjoyed since I was forced to look carefully at the art as well as reading the words.
Also, the characterization was not explicitly written like a lot of short stories do for simplicity. Yet again, characterization is done implicitly through their actions.
Plus, I really enjoyed the art. It is simple and clean yet appropriately illustrates the wickedness that consumes a few of the characters and the hollowness of those who were robbed of their senses. It's really quite wonderful.
Now, the story itself is sort of unique and is too complex for a one shot. Seeing as the author tried to have a "crazy plot twist" (Rain turning out to be evil; which wasn't real big news to me anyways since I didn't care for him in the first place 'cause he was hatein' on Rio… <3 Rio) a longer allotment of pages was definitely necessary. Before and after the "crazy plot twist", the storytelling felt rushed. There was just too much information (a lot of which wasn't included anyways), needed conversation, and happenings to fit in such a small number of pages. Especially since a majority of those 50 pages was portraying a rather anticlimactic battle. Since Rain was only a badass in his imagination… and Ellen-doll gave away his big secret. I also think the the battle felt anticlimactic because there was little emotional connection to any of the characters. It established who was good and who was evil but that's about it. :\
