I've screwed up my internal clock so badly that it's natural for me to stay awake very late...

Same...

basically it started with procrastinating final projects in college then trying to catch up. Panic and stress. laugh

Keep the TV on.
Might be the same as music, though. xDD
But I keep mine mute, I just keep the TV on so that I can see people moving...so I won't be scared. O_O.
And stay awake to remember that I have to turn it off.

So true. Nothing beats working under pressure to keep you up. laugh

I've tried a lot of things before this though. Cold showers, and lots and lots of caffeine used to do the trick. Avoid sugars, (this means flavored coffee, most energy drinks, etc) as it will pick you up and just as quickly drop you down. Play some music. I would even get up and do some jumping jacks back in the day. It helps to be around friends to keep you entertained.

If I wanna sleep, I'll probably sleep.
I don't like holding myself back on this.

Unless you want to risk shifting your sleep hours, all you have to do is gather enough will power to stay up a couple of hours longer. It's not that hard, but I can't imagine what you'll benefit from it.

I've done it on a number of occasions, going to sleep in 5am instead of my usual 1-2am at the time.
It was hard and very annoying. My body was screaming for sleep, but I didn't listen and stayed up due to petty reasons.

Do it long enough (even a single day can do) and your sleeping hours are screwed beyonde simple repair.
It's also hard to fall asleep when you don't want to, either, so think before you act.

Really though, my brain starts protesting and my eyes start to shut. It's not like I can be much productive while I'm at it.

If you still want to go through with it, you'll have time to sleep. Better yet, make sure it'll pay off by having whatever you need to do later in the day most of the time.

I conditioned myself at a young age by watching way too much TV at night. It was Cartoon Network in the bed for hours when I was in elementary school and younger, late night shows after that, and reading manga and watching anime after that. Playing video games too late for my own good also happened throughout my life. Now I can't sleep until 6-7 AM. I would make sure to schedule my classes past 12 PM.

I really should get that fixed... It's very hard now that I have a laptop I can just use late at night and just have it resting on my stomach.

Don't do it. Once in a while is alright, but
keep mesing around with your biological clock
and you're done for.
You should follow your
biological rhythm or your body
will have to endure a workload it
can't withstand forever.

If you however do want to predispose your health,
staying up late is easier in a well lit place.
You could drink a bucket of coffee and take
a sleep of 20 minutes. After that you will be
slightly more awake, but that's not really a good
thing to begin with. The time that the society makes
us get up is bad for us to begin with. There's a reason
why people aged 13 to 21 are having a hard time to get
up at 7 AM, but not at 11 AM and that they find it
easy to stay up late and that people past the age of 55
have the same sleeping pattern as 10-year-olds.
It's all about your biological clock.

I think once in a while is ok, but doing it constantly is harmful.

I myself have never stayed up all night. I just can't do it. I can't see the point in forcing myself to stay awake when my body is screaming for sleep.
The only reason I would ever consider staying up all night for would be to work, but even then, I'm so tired I can't concentrate, so it doesn't help at all. I once tried to do that with my maths revision, but I noticed that around 11pm onwards my brain goes "no more" and I can't seem to remember how to solve anything. Maths at night is a no no for me XD

The only time I've stayed up until the early hours of morning was to watch stuff. I'm always practically dead the next day and often catch up with sleep at school XD

That's one way to keep myself awake, guaranteed to keep the whole neighbourhood awake infact (and wishing they were dead). Playing an instrument isn't my forte.
I'm majoring in bio. Not very artistically inclined. I envy artistic people.

P.S. I have a guitar though. But ... yeah...

never do ANYTHING in your bed. youll just slowly fall asleep with the light on.

If you do something in a cold enviornment, you wont fall asleep as well. so keep the ac on super duper low. you can catch a cold later but who cares if you finish right now.

i dont ever fall asleep unless i have nothing to do. i stayed up to 4 am though just for the hell of it once. fun right? not if youre alone none . you feel like talking to yourself.

Please don't ever stay up late. That is very, very bad for your health.
(on an unrelated note, it makes me jealous that you can get away with it once and a while #^^)
If you absolutely must stay awake, then make sure to get up at your normal time the next morning. It's even more unhealthy to stay awake all night a sleep during the day.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else been awake >72 hours?

I lol'd.

It's not bad for your health. Constant changes in your sleep schedule is what is detrimental to your body.

It can take years off your life.

Oh noes!

Tip on not to stay up late : meditate about 15 mins before you sleep, in the dark. ( if you intend to sleep at early hour 10 - 12 PM )

That means you've not read enough
stuff regarding chronobiology.

Actually, I've done research on it.

We subjected some mice to some make-shift jet lag, by switching up the light schedule to represent traveling from West Coast to East Coast and vica versa. We changed the light schedule every 4 days, which was just enough for the mice to get used to their new sleeping schedule.

The mice that weren't subjected to the conditions lived up to 3-4 months longer than those that were subjected to the conditions.

As such we were able to conclude that moving along from the West Coast to the East Coast is detrimental to your internal clock (lol), and that constant changes in sleep schedule takes time off a mouse's life.

Now relate lab mice who live for about 18 months, and relate to humans who live about 80 years.

As for staying up late... As long as you do it here and there, it should barely be harmful at all.
