I give them a shoulder to cry on (if need be), I listen to them talk about whatever's wrong for as long as they need to, offer insightful advice (I don't take sides--but I look at both sides of the issue), lighten the mood by making them laugh, and generally making them feel a whole lot better about themselves.
Oh, and hugs work wonders for them, too.
This sort of thing is my thing (I'm the Mr. Nice Guy in my group). =]

I am not good at cheering people up. At all.
Usually my method is "make fun or who ever or what ever made them upset."

Well, i always thought I sucked at it, but lately I was told I'm not bad at comforting people.
Basically, I just hear them out, then say what I think about the situation... in the nicest possible way. (like, I'm not gonna lie and be like "Oh yeah, you were right and that bitch was wrong" if it's not true, but I would try to butter everything up and try to find something positive about it).

Hear their side of the story, and totally tell them straight out what i think while being neutral about the whole issue =]

I just bring some alcohol over to their place.... it's an excuse for me to drink, at least.

I can't comfort to save my life.
I usually give them space to cool off first.
And then compare them to how things could get so much worse and how children in Uganda get kidnapped to join the army so their situation couldn't be that bad.
Bless those poor, poor souls.

I try, but it usually comes out wrong a, so I can sound insensitive when I'm really not.

Ditto. I try to make them laugh? Or take them out or something.
