The system is fine as it is.
I think there isn't much you can do about poeple who randomaly vote 1..
I voted 1 for claymore and wrote why..
So maybe when somebody rates a series so low they should post a reason?...

About the idea of reseting the 1 votes.. I don't know.. maybe the onces without a post? because I see many great manga get voted 1 for no apperent reason *wonders if thats can be done*.. most of the yaoi manga are like that.. makes me think there are people who lurk yaoi and vote low scores... dead

Well I guess he decided to let people discuss though. Otherwise I guess a moderator could lock it. none

I like the forced comment thing and the character limit for it. ok, so they could just type: noooooooooooooooooooooooooo, it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks soooooo baaad r sth biggrin

The thing is, it should be a character limit but a character minimum. You're trying to encourage or require more than two words out of people. bigrazz laugh

Obviously xD

We both said (strongly implied) minimum.

I say, I think my little make-up comment had more than 50 characters in it. THAT's what I meant. You can put on a word minimum but it still won't matter, there still will be assholes who'll just write more nonsense to fill the minimum.

All comments get skimmed by mods, if the 'must write comment when giving a 10 or a 1' rule gets implemented, the mods will be able to stop anyone writing nonsense/spam to fill a word limit (read: minimum) when they check it.

Also as rileel or releel (I don't remember; he had some (big) posts) said before, and I'll say it again, the many ratings of 10 can hardly be called abuse. A popular series 'true' rating will probably be atleast about 8. A 10 is maximumly 2pts off ?? Now lets see for a "1"... 8-1= 2? nooo wait it's 7.

There is no such thing as a "true" rating. Who can be really objective in this forum? Most of the guys around rate according to their feelings not according to the actual "value" of the manga. If you were right, that would mean that any manga with a truckload of 10's would be good which is nonsense.

By true rating i'm referring to the average rating if everyone had voted objectively. Basically the rating a manga ought to get if rating systems would work perfectly. Most manga fall in the 6 - 9 rating.

But removing the 1-rating votes is something that can be done; in contrary to removing the 10-rating votes as some are suggesting.
(1) There are waaaaaaaaaaay more '10's than '1's; thus the amount of users that'll have to review their list is waaaaaaaay bigger.

That doesn't mean anything, it's not because there are more people voting 10 than 1 that they are more right. As it's been already said neither 10's nor 1's are correct as there is no perfect nor truly horrendous work that deserve such ratings. Therefore if you remove 1, you must remove 10 as well.

My suggestion was really not about right or wrong, it was about to slightly adjust the rating closer to the "true" rating (see above). And i'm sure you understand this if you think about it a little (or study more math), because the way average works, the 1-ratings have a much bigger impact then the 10-ratings. And not only does it have a bigger impact, but it's a statistic anomaly too (see the first page, my second post) and that's why I suggested the purge. I do not want to forbid people to vote 1, because i've repeatedly said that they can vote 1 again if they really want to.

Why is this topic still going...

Being true isn't about being right or wrong?

And as you have stated, they can easily vote 1s again, so what would be the purpose of this exercise? You purge them and they vote back, you purge them again and they vote back, wouldn't that mean this would end up being the truth? Being objective is still subjective to an extent since one's own sense of objectivity will never be the exact same as someone else's.

Purging the votes isn't much of a solution much less a bandaid patch job, the issue isn't so much about the math but the nature of people itself. The amount of 1s are also spread throughout several series so even removing them will still get you roughly the same order or ratings for the series as before.

It bugs me when people do this because for everyone who likes yaoi, it makes it harder for us to find out which titles are good, and which aren't

Many of us just ask NightSwan, LunaMay, or some of the other well-known yaoi fans for their suggestions, or use the 'I'm Looking For' threads. (Or ask in the 'Hotcakes' yaoi discussion of NightSwan's, though we discuss more than yaoi.)

I just don't see the point of removing or resetting the '1' votes. They'll just come back. There's no way that you could enforce any sort of

"If you don't like the genre then don't vote on it because that messes up the rating"

sort of policy, nor is there a way you can stop 'anti-fans' from voting their opinion. You just have to take it for what it is - a general indicator.

Hm, well, from a statistical point of view: although eliminating outliers is a good thing, one cannot guarantee that the all the votes--or even most or some of the votes--for "1" are the outliers, so to eliminate all of them would be to decrease the sample pool unjustifiably, and to decrease the sample pool is a bad thing. So I think it is best to just include everyone's votes, that way, you give everyone's opinion equal weight and allow the sample pool to be as large as possible--and the larger the sample pool, the less of an impact the outliers have.

concerning fairness: I think everyone's opinion should be counted. Yes, even if they were being childish brats and have a stupid reason for picking the rating that they did, they are still people who have a right to their opinion.

as for the person trying to decide whether to read a series or not: Hopefully, if there is something really odd in the rating graph, or if there are a lot of really unjustafiably biased comments, a person will notice and adjust their evaluation to exclude what they percieve to be outliers. This hopefully leads them to more accurate conclusions. So the "solution" to this could just be a discretionary human one. Although, how well this works is... well, questionable.

and personally: I put a lot of thought and consideration into the ratings I give series. If I can't stand the genre, I almost never would be reading it anyway, so I won't be rating it. I never rate a series based on the quality of the scanlation--that would make no sense at all. If I haven't read enough of a series to get a good idea of its nature, I don't vote. It is rare for me to give a 10 or a 1 to a series, because, by nature, those are simply difficult scores to earn--I don't give scores like that lightly. And when I do give something a 10 or a 1, I mean it, and I have good reason. I don't want my vote being discounted because of others' foolishness.

In closing--although it is obvious--I feel it needs to be said: The solution to this entire problem is simple. Probable? No, but simple. Vote with reason and integrity. That's all.

Everybody have the right to vote, like he wants. I rated about 10 series 1. If 1 will be removed, next will be 2, 3... what give you the right to say, that we can´t vote 1. If the serie is really shitty, I vote for 1, if you vote for 5 or 6, that´s also your choice. So let me my choice too! If somebody only spam the 1´s, that also is his choice (and his time). People, don´t chose manga by rating. Everybody has his own brain.

-about the comments: NOT EVERYBODY CAN SPEAK ENGLISH, (you narcissistic ame.... OK, I won´t be bad anymore). roll eyes

so, I wanted to say: Please, don´t give my 1 away!

so...if we remove the 1-rating and 10-rating, here's whats gonna happen:

*People who used to vote 1 will move on to 2
*People who used to vote 10 will move on to 9

~after a few years~

somebody comes again and asks to remove the 2 and 9 votes.......

and so it goes~~~~

lol

i think the main problem is the people not the system ^_^; then again...who am i to judge i have lots of 10s in my rating system XD

laugh Exactly.

I really don't understand people that give '1' ratings, yes it has a lot to do with personal likes and what not, but I see the 1 rating as honoring the WORST manga out there, which really you can't say for sure since there are thousands of mangas out there, what's to say that's the worst. Same with the '10' rating, people give out 10's so easily. XD Don't think I've ever given any of these ratings, since I've yet to read the best manga or the worst manga out there. O_O

Like many here, my problem isn't really with the system more so with the people...Some people tend to rate based on genres they like or don't like. >.> And even rate on series they have yet to read. <.<

Anyway, eliminating the 1 rating won't do anything, that's a fact. It'll just move on to the 2 rating, as Ranmaru has stated. eyes
