Hey guys, now something that hasen't been discussed here before.
As some of you may know, the group of the eight economicly strongest countries are meeting in germany ( well, china isn't welcome, instead russia is there, thats why its sometimes called 7+1 instead)
anyway, there were riots the weekend and tomorrow the meeting starts. The police built a barbed wire fence and created a 5 mile no go zone. The place where they are meeting is a really small tourist resort and since you can't get anywhere near there i didn't feel like going, i don't really have the time now anyway.
This morning the demostrators completly outsmarted the police ( of which there are 16000!!!!) and managed to get through the 5 mile no go zone and had blocked all roads to the resort. Ha, i really wish i was there! I linked some pictures, it looks great.

Sorry Bully, but I don't really keep up on current events so I can't really discuss G-8.
But I did look at the english pic link, and many of the pics look ... so ... liesurely? Smiles, hiking through fields and woods. Standing in tall grass and flowers with an umbrella ...
How could the police not see 16000 people? Did they not have helicopters or something surveying the area??

I just talked to a friend and some others who were there today.
They managed to get past because the police had a lot of ground to cover. The demonstrators split into small groups and just walked threw woods and fields. It was bloody hot and the police wearing full protection gear ( dark green or black with helmets and boots) had a really hard time keeping up with the protestors.
Also, the police had a hard time with their vehicels in the oppen terrain, exspecially the water tanks.(waterthrowers? watercannons?) They had quit a few helecopters, but they weren't enough to keep transporting the police wherever they needed to go. Also the protestors would run around the fields to keep the helicopters from landing. You can't land a chopper on a field with people running around it.
And also, the police were just really tired and worn out. 8 days of running around all day and night. My friends told me that protestors would run away from the police, then run back to tease the gasping police forces and run away again.
Oh, a lot of people were caught and arrested for various reasons. About 8 have already been sentenced for 6-10 months. One of em was from japan. Seems the japanese were pretty active.
it wasn't all honey and cake, the weekend before there were riots with about 500 injured on both sides. A lot of teargas and batons being used by the police and a lot of stones being thrown by rioters. Thank god the german police don't use rubber bullets.
And to put the final wrapping on the present the head of the german group of advocates is sewing the german police because people identified a undercover police man trying to urge people to throw rocks against other police officers.
Edit: added some pictures from the riots, also with english subtitles.

Sorry, didn't mean to trivialize it, just those particular pics didn't seem horribly representative?
Ahh, so the police knew they were there, they just couldn't keep up or were hindered.

Oh boy why did I discover this thread just too late... It really was impressive to see what some 1000+ crazy people can do, it reminded me a bit of Genua. But I think everything was hyped too much in Germany about G8, most people will have forgotten about it in a few months... or weeks... or already have.
I think the most spectecular scene was the Greenpeace boat which was rammed by a police boat looked funny, if you're not in the boat yourself.
Uh well nothing left to say, I didn't really follow what happened there except for the riots (which are always interesting ) because I had more important things to do.

nobody really mentioned politics, it was just about the police losing control.
If we were discussing politics we would be talking about what was agreed on by whom which means what. Or why me oppose to or support the G8 at all.
