Like the title says, just wondering why it's such a popular fruit among the mangaka community. It's been used for titles, character names (*coughBleachcough*), and etc. I mean, what's wrong with papayas and kiwis?
Would anyone mind explaining this please?

they look pretty
better than papayas at least, maybe kiwis
and papayas taste really bad if you leave them for too long
strawberries actually don't taste very good, they're really sour
doesn't ichigo also mean 15, or am i just partially retarded?

Just a wild guess, but maybe it has something to do with how it's in japanese. Ichigo can be viewed as ichi (1) - go (5). Put together they are 15, oh, sweet age, love blooms and stuff. xD
Note: It's really a (really) wild guess

They look like heart shapes when you cut them in half.

They aren't as labor intensive as kiwis or papayas!
Kiwis you have to scrape out of the brown skin, and papayas...actually, I just don't like the taste of papaya, so I'm being a little prejudiced here...
But strawberries you can just pop into your mouth!

SHOCK! you don't like strawberries? we had strawberry plants at the last place i lived in. straight of the bush they are amazing
as for why there are so many manga titles... no idea? could be the all 15 yo chars about. i guess it also just sounds nice in Japanese. I honestly don't mind its use in names. it feels kind of familiar by now.

there is more than one variety of strawberry. the smaller varieties are usually sweeter. Unless its some mutant variety that is both large and sweet.

hm, i think ichigo in kurosaki ichigo's name ain't mean strawberry.
the kanji ichigo in his name means something like "the protecting one" or "the one who protect"

Personally maybe its the lost in culture rather than translation thing, but I would feel uncomfortable if I was named after a fruit esp on my passport...But then again, in my country, ppl are named after flowers which might be weird in other places where ppl arent....

well.. putting aside Bleach.. if its connected to some romantic titles and characters then its cause strawberries were always kind of a romantic fruit.. just take the mix of champagne, strawberries and cream.. this combination always gets idolized as the perfect setup for a romantic time.. and there's also the thing waftingwish mentioned about looking like a heart.. i mean it does look so, its red, sweet and so forth, and so on..

Perhaps kiwis don't look good without the skin being removed (not that they will look better if removed though). And papayas either... XD
I think red colour attracts attention. And I agree with the heart shape when cut half thing. And it's a culture thing too. It's complex - heart shapes can to be related to romance or something but the Japanese tend to be a bit over the top.
