erm...kangaroos etc. etc.
Looks like I'm not the only one with a limited view on Australia.
I only know two people from there. One is an expat now living in Rome and the other is a guy who breaks down the Australian stereotype no better than Steve Irwin does.

Emu, not ostrich. Ostriches are Africa, but close enough.
Stereotypes are good, because Australians are generally keen to gain acknowledgement from other countries, and so I think we tend to identify well with the stereotypes even though there are many that are not like that. Though people in the bush do have a very, very strong visual identity, with their acobras and what not. They just are not the majority. I grew up in the bush so I'm well acquainted with it.
I remember the Simpson episode about Australia. That was funny. We tend to get excited when we are mentioned on a world scale.

That they call sidewalks, "Footpaths", and eat Beets on pizza. 0.o I thought that was really weird...
Also; Dry, Barren, Shrubs, Kangaroos, "Crickey", and their accents.

Hm, when I think of Austrailia, I think of mostly desert, with most of the population concentrated in urban areas that cover very little of the continent. I don't know if that's realistic or not, but that's what I think of.
Other things: wilderness.... sheep... aborigines... Aussie slang... "macho" people... kangaroos and snakes... vegemite... rustic food...

What do I think of Australia?
I think I really want to go there!!!!
Perhaps not in that huge red central area that is scary as hell....with the deadly snakes slinking about, and funnel web spiders plotting my demise, but the coastal cities look stunning (though from what I understand, the funnel web spiders enjoy the urban life as well as if not more than country life). I want to see the Barrier Reef. I am rather fascinated by the accents, myself. The Aborigines seem...interesting. They are unique.
I remembered a gorgeous Irish guy named Liam from USF who I met at a party. He played the didgeridoo, a fascinating instrument that the drunk punks couldn't figure out LOL. I think that came from that part of the world...

Treatment of foreigners who aren't on vacation.
I personally am currently living in Australia and I am of an Asian descent and I can vouch that the treatment of foreigners living in Australia is not as bad as thought to be. I have just about never come across bad treatment due to discriminatory reasons so please don't think that Australians are racist. Australia is a multicultural country, the government supports this too and other cultures are welcomed. I have found that the majority of Australians are very open to different cultures and treat everyone equally and there is no more discrimination than any other country, less I'd even dare to say.
Big island! Desert! Rugby team! Lots of weird animals!

Some of the things that come to mind:
bearded dragons
frilled lizards
crocs
Aboriginies
emus
koala bears
desert
pleasant people
accents
convict settlements
I've always had an interest in visiting, hope to do it within the next few years.
