I think they don't know any. I don't know manga like that, also the only Japanese classics that I know written in a pre meiji period is Genji Monogatari, I'm ignorant of Japanese Classic letterature.
I asked because for "pre meiji" story you can count in Musashi and Vagabond but the story has been written in 20th century.

Er, pre-meiji classics are a little bit tougher. There's a lot of stuff out there, to be certain, but as far as literary history is concerned the vast majority of the material from that time period is either Chinese or folklore or poetry.

I'm pretty sure that there are adaptations of the Genji Monogatari and Taketori Monogatari floating around, but those are really about it as far as the English world is concerned. At least as far as I know, though I wouldn't be surprised if a variation on the Heike Monogatari is floating around somewhere.

If you're interested in the literature in general, my personal favorite is a collection of kaidan-style short stories entitled Ugetsu Monogatari ("Tales of Moonlight and Rain"). There was an excellent film adaptation made in the 1950s.
