Is the genre wrong?

Member 8:54 pm, Jun 1 2010 Posts: 13	The genre says that Adarushan no Hanayome is a romance, but when I read it there was absolutely no type of romance even hinted. The protagonist and his wife seemed to have a "I like you as a friend" relationship, and the readers are left to assume that when she gets older they fall in love or however anyone wants to imagine it. Besides that nothing even came close to anyone (besides his brother and his wife) building up to a romantic relationship. It wasn't even hinted. Because there was no romance in this manga, I took the romance genre off, but someone has placed it back up. Did I miss the romance somewhere? I agree that it's a really vague romance- but the main character obviously cares for the girl, the girl obviously cares for him. We see hints of romance starting, but it really never gets to the point where we can actually see it... I think it's technically a "romance", but yeah, it's really vague. Can't argue with you.

Two people getting to know each other is a very common plot for a romance manga, and many don't have the characters admit their love even to themselves for upwards of 50 chapters, yet still retain a romance tag. Some go even longer... An example, you say? Skip Beat. If Skip Beat could be a "romance" manga before Ren admitted to liking Kyouko, then there's nothing wrong with the much more personal story, which actually focuses on a relationship, in this manga to be labelled as such. ________________ This signature was recovered from Hades to serve in my rotting armies.

Also I do enjoy those long it has been almost 50 chapters and I am only starting to like you, but i don't love you yet manga. However it doesn't matter when, where, or how long it takes for a romance to start, just as long as it appears. Also, there can be important non-romantic relationships in a story as well. Even non-romantic close friendships. Just because a person is getting to know someone doesn't mean they are in love. Same for people who are two peas in a pod that are considered the best of friends, it doesn't mean that they are in love. Yes I know in the world of manga a lot have it that the relationship always becomes romantic, but there are manga that don't do that. (I can only think of anime though, perfect time for my brain to just blank on manga. Sorry I can't refer you to any manga like that at the moment.) I wasn't looking for a confession, kiss or anything obvious like that. They could have just had him or her smile gently at the other for one panel and I would have been peachy. My issue is that it feels more like a romance only because there is a romance tag on it, not because of the story. It had a: "Because the tag says it is a romance, I guess they fall in love later" sort of feel, rather then: "They will fall for each other because of how the characters are portrayed". Its like watching a romance movie that never even hints at anybody liking anybody. Your left checking the box asking yourself: "This was a romance movie right? Did they mislabel it?" However I suppose tsubasa22 is right. It was vaguely implied. If you blink your going to miss it. I knew they were moving towards a friendship stage, and that is where they leave you. In a way I suppose that could be telling us that from there, things will progress. But don't they only put the tag romance if there is actual romance? Like for manga that have no romance tag on it, but instead focus on friendships, should we put the romance tag on those because its a shojo, the two friends get along REALLY well, and we can just imagine them falling in love in the future if the manga was longer? I feel like I need to go read more manga that are vague on the romance like this. Just to see the different ways of doing it. ________________ You are now gazing at my signature. It's okay. This sounds like what has happened in a few manga I read that were mysteriously labeled as shounen ai or shoujo ai. The characters were really really good friends, and definitely seemed closer than a lot of people who were dating, but it was still just a friendship. And they had the tag and I didn't mind them having a tag.
