ask them why is it so, ask them to defend their statement.
but the world is diverse and our country is democratic, thus the freedom of speech.. so anyway, there wont be any bloodshed.

Agree. It's idiotic to say something's stupid when you didn't even try.

I've had people tell me they feel sorry for me, a joke I'm sure but certainly Manga is not their thing. I just shrug it off.

I'd say, I can't defend manga as a reply because, I respect any person's opinion. I won't pity them for neither trying to read nor understand. It'd just be a waste for both our time. It's not a big deal to me anyways. smile

I used to be like them, because I once treated manga as the lowest form of literature (Being a Tolkien fanatic), and was a "lifeless" person's escape from reality.

Of course, I was wrong. And proved myself how false my prejudices were, because, manga was way better than some books I've read. And, have more scenes with which I can relate to. Moreover, my political science teacher who was an excellent scholar and drinking buddy, admitted to me lately that he read Sanctuary.... twice!

It's how readers handling manga that makes prejudices stronger, but at times they become the wiser when you ask them of their views in life.

Try to show them that they are wrong. There are so many different kinds of manga that it's pretty generalizing to say all are stupid. It's like saying books are stupid or films are stupid. If they absolutely hate it I'd quickly change the topic, then ^^

well, some of my friends thought that all manga are hentai and I had a hard time to convince them that there are all kinds of manga. And some thought all manga have an ugly style... Just prejudges, but if they don't like it, it's their opinion. That does not influence me, since that's my opinion.

my entire family, and extended family, thinks manga, comics and animation (western and japanese) to be stupid. it was to the point that my parents would throw out any form of comic or animation. cry the only type of animation they allowed was disney (or disney like).

in fact I was 16 when I managed to read my first comic from start to finish (without getting in trouble) and thats because my school library got "watchmen" in. they can't do anything now because I don't get pocket money and instead I have a job. biggrin

Laugh and tell them it's their loss.

They probably wouldn't be my friend if they said something like that though.

Everyone has different things that they enjoy and if some of my friends think reading Manga is stupid that's fine. There are hobbies that my friends have that I think are stupid/uninteresting, so why should I care if they think my hobby is stupid, no one likes a hypocrite.

I dunno. I've had a few friends tell them that its stupid without even trying to read any. I suggest a few works that I especially love and believe will fit their tastes, and just ask them to give it a chance. Sometimes it works, but it usually doesn't. People have an amazing ability to be prejudiced for no reason whatsoever.
