I never knew there was a music section here in MU.

Anyways, it seems like there are many posts regarding Asian music, so I thought that I should encourage people to try listening to English and American bands. I fell in love with some of them, and listening to their songs separate me from the stressful environment I am in constant battle with.

As an alternative music appreciator, I was thinking about listening to more artists of the same genre. I am already aware that there are sites where you can search these kind of stuff, but I am hoping to get answers from you guys, the MU community.

-Coldplay (Alternative rock)
-Radiohead (Alternative rock)
-Gorillaz (Alternative rock)
-Vampire Weekend (Indie rock)
-Phoenix (Indie rock)

(I have already listened to songs by Muse and Maroon 5 -- awesome artists by the way -- if these were going to be your recommendations.)

I also appreciate any people who share the same interests as mine, and I hope to hear opinions about alternative music, artists, or just music in general.

EDIT:
I am already aware of MCR (My Chemical Romance), Green Day, and Linkin Park. I was first introduced to the world of music and realized my style in music thanks to them.

If you like Vampire Weekend (which I see that you do), then listen to Phoenix!
And since you like Coldplay, I'm sure you'll like The Fray.
Some other indie bands that I love that you might also like: Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, Ohbijou, Beirut (my favorite), Headlights

Thanks for your recommendations, Pikapu.

I have listened to Phoenix, whose commendable talents as a remarkable college band I believe are comparable to those of Vampire Weekend, another one of my favorite bands.

I'll be sure to check out The Fray and your recommendations for indie music.

OH! You're my music buddy! (Crap... this is long... and I still have more recommendations)

Uhmm... *shuffles through iTunes... (I second Death Cab for Cutie -- you gotta listen to their albums: Plans and Transatlanticism.)

U2 (British, alternative rock). I'm sure you've heard them on the radio. But I really REALLY appreciate their creations from the 80s. To give you an idea of how epic/anthemic their music is (which is similar to Coldplay's anthemic feel but not so artsy-album: Viva la Vida...), try their The Best of 1980–1990 -- I listened to this album on repeat for months... it's my fallback album. And I really like their new album: No Line On the Horizon. "Magnificent" was one of the songs that the crew played in the background before Coldplay went on stage for their Viva La Vida tour. biggrin

The Mars Volta (American, experimental rock) -- their sound is similar to Radiohead (but they like to throw in surprises). I thought that De-Loused in the Comatorium was bad-@$%. A fair warning, don't listen to them on max or even medium on your speakers/earphones unless you want to become deaf... they like to start off mellow and suddenly BAM! Onslaught of drums, guitar, bass, and everything else.

One Republic deserves a mention. I was very impressed by their album: Dreaming Out Loud. It's got this mix of alternative, experimental, RnB, happy rock -- so every track has a different sound. Loved it!

Time for female vocals! Yeah Yeah Yeahs (American, indie rock). It's Blitz! is their newest album that is different from their previous works. It's more synthy-poppy... but it's fun!

Okay, I'm going to just list everyone else... sorry... but I realized I talk way too much...
Snow Patrol
Silversun Pickups
Peter Bjorn and John
Foo Fighters
Flight of the Conchords -- this is for pure fun.

I'm not sure where you're from, but if you're in the US, Pandora is a great site that attempts to suggest music that you like (it's a Music Genome Project). I found some artists from there too!

Franz Ferdinand or Lostprophets? I love Lostprophets myself. More their old stuff than their new, but yeah. Nickelback fit too I guess.

I recommend Keane and Hard-Fi as well.

@ hobbitelf518
I really appreciate your elaborate, constructive post.

It seems like Death Cab for Cutie plays heavily in my genre of music. I'll look into them.

I have definitely heard of U2 and listened to a couple of their songs. They give me the same feel as the songs by Coldplay and also learned that U2 was one of Coldplay's influencers after doing some research. I forgot to mention them in my first post.

Mm, more experimental rock, love it. I'll try listening to The Mars Volta. And thanks for the warning.

I have heard of OneRepublic but haven't gotten the chance to listen to their songs. Self-proclaimed, "genreless" band according to Wikipedia -- interesting.

More added to my list of artists I'm planning on listening to: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Snow Patrol, Silversun Pickups, Peter Bjorn and John, Foo Fighters, Flight of the Conchords. I can't believe I haven't heard of these artists before. Time to do some research.

I'll look into Pandora as well. Thanks for your advice.

Hmm, I haven't listened much to western music in the last year or so... I definitely second Franz Ferdinand though. Some of the bands I used to listen to on my itunes include:
- Arctic Monkeys (an artist similar in style, I suppose, is Jamie T)
- The Kooks
- Razorlight
- The Fratellis
- Glasvegas
- Keane
- Manic Street Preachers
- Klaxons
- Kaiser Chiefs
- The Enemy
- Snow Patrol

Another artist I enjoy (though not classed as alternative) is Paolo Nutini.

Thanks, leloMew and BurningFish.

I have added your recommendations to my list, no worries. I recognize a couple of artists (Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers), so it seems like the rest fit into the genre as well.

I just listened to Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out, and I love it.

Brushing my teeth today, I just remembered that if you like Phoenix, you most likely will like The Temper Trap (Australian band). Here's an idea: "Sweet Disposition".

I also heard very VERY favorable reviews from my friends about the 500 Days of Summer (soundtrack). Being a big fan of indie music, this may be a good way to be introduced to new bands!

I noticed that lots have recommended Franz Ferdinand -- and I agree... they're fun!!! And Anberlin gets thumbs up from me too!

I'll post more as I listen to more music.
