Hi there^^

I've just noticed that I'd love to listen to some medieval-like music(??). Songs like those that the bards sang, with old instruments like a lute or some flutes.
If there are Metal-bands that have this kind of style I'd like it, but I'd also love it without Metal. The problem is, I don't know any bands that do that kind of music. Can you recommend some to me?

If my description was too bad, check this video. it's a German fairy tale. I love the style of the music in the background between 0:08-0:47
sorry I don't have a better example no

Edit:Better examples:
Bling Guardian - Bard's song

Apocaliptyca ? something like that?
i really like the Escaflowne and Juuni kokki OST
Orff, Cramina Burana

My advice is, that you can try search for medieval theme movies and games OST, like the Patrician game, and like the First knight movie.

Apocalyptica, probably not. It's a great band, but I just can tell from what songs I've listened to and they didn't fit that much. I'd like some medieval instruments like more flutes, lutes, harps or harpsichords and so on. I really don't know how to describe it properly -___-

Carmina Burana is just awesome^^ but a little too pompous xD anyway I love it^^

Escaflowne is nice, but not exactly what I was looking for. The choir is good, but there are the electrical sounds... and a little too pompous again, with that whole orchestra <3 However some songs fit wonderfully. i just noticed Memory of Fanelia

Juuni kokki sounds pretty awesome. I'm into it now^^ thank you biggrin

Jupp, that sounds good, Thank you for replying <3 I'll try, but I don't want just soundtracks, even though I love them. So I'd appreciate more suggestions smile

My first guess would be Apocalyptica with the song Hall of the Mountain King..
But if its not to your liking: just type 'medieval music' in youtube smile Once you know the songs, you know the artists!

Good luck!

Cruachan
Eluveitie
Medieval Baebes
Corvus Corax
Omnia
Alan Stivell
Gaelic Storm
Blackmore's Night
Faun
Midnattsol (not sure, it's been a while since I listened to them)
Nebelhexe (same as Midnattsol)
Folkearth
Korpiklaani (
Maybe Haggard too, although they lean more towards symphonic.
Hammerfall and Rhapsody for power metal (though I personally don't like them. ~_~ )

I know some of it might not fit exactly, but I think Cruachan, Medieval Baebes, Faun and Blackmore's Night are your best bet. Most of the rest (along with the other half of Cruachan's stuff) lean more towards metal or celtic folk.

As for OSTs, check Some of Inon Zur's work for Dragon Age.

I second HeavennevaeH's recommendations, you'll find a band or two you'll like from HeavennevaeH's list.

I Also got a couple of bands that might interest you.

Qntal - they're basically ambient/ techno combined with the folk
Subway To Sally
Aes Dana - A French metal band
Arkona - One of my favorite bands biggrin From Russia , might be listed under it's native name, Аркона

Elexorien - Power Metal band

Some of these bands might not be your cup of tea or be what you're looking for, but these are the best fits that I can pick out of my head at this moment. I hope you like some of them. Most of these suggestions are metal bands.

To be more precisely, I think her album "Enchant" fits more to the whole "medieval-like" theme than her "Opheliac" album. I think these songs of hers fits the most:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_028PTXYBU4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVuUNF735TA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=468QyCGJZ50

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IimC1fmP65Y
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0ncybXLBo0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpXdNaXYysk

I think you'll at least like one of these songs unless I'm the only one who thought they were "medieval-like". :3

Also, Yuki Kajiura has some "medieval-like" soundtracks like this one from Pandora Hearts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPL-E1mt6f8 It's a little short though... a little too short, sadly. sad
Other "medieval-like" song from Yuki Kajiura with vocal (also from Pandora Hearts): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5xPKwMVXrM
And this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWNNGB0lE_E though maybe this one has too much electronic sounds for you, it still has a medieval vibe to it IMO. ^^
Another one of her (again, from PH): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvwSKo0hEgA (although this one doesn't exactly sound "medieval-like" it still has an awesome flute playing in the middle of the song <3)

I'll try to think of more "medieval-like" music because I really love this sort of music too... if I know more I'll post them here. ^^

Edit: Oh, how could I forget O-Life Japan?! His music is definitely very "medieval-like" as well... check some of these songs out by him:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6-YikpCWhY (this one's more asian medieval though... =P)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QCVq6hQjAg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsatyLDWxMY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N45W1NhzYrY

Was supposed to be "a few" video's but I ended up posting more video's than I was intended to... oh well. ^^ Hope you'll enjoy them though, it's at least "medieval-like" in my ears haha... biggrin

I have a feeling you might know this soundtrack already... but what comes to mind for me is Nino Rota's composition for Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet (1968).

Example: Juliet.

And of course Romeo and Juliet (epilogue) (there are woodwinds when you listen further)
