I have some free time on my hands at the moment so I want to immerse myself in a rather complex and intricate anime, preferably supernatural. Something with a good, thick plot and interesting characters. I don't really like school life (being a dominant plot point) or mecha robot type of stuff, but I'll try it if you insist it's worth watching smile
I'm also not looking for anything too long, 24 episodes or so is good.

Mushishi:
Beautiful, soothing, beautiful, interesting, beautiful...
It fits all your criteria except one: it doesn't really have a consistent plot. Instead, most of the episodes are standalone, though there are certain themes (those little mushi, what are they?) and questions that continue to pop up throughout the series. When watching this, connect your computer to your TV, for gods sake!

Ghost hunt:
This one has a really good plot. The first episode does start in a school, so you might think that it is a school anime (which it isn't), but they soon move on to more interesting places, for hours of ghost huntin', excorsisin', possesin' fun.

Ergo proxy
Is it supernatural or isn't it. Its pretty darn mysterious, though, with a plot that made me go: "Wait... what, wasn't he?... Wasn't she?... Why, how, when GAAAAAH!" I couldn't stop watching, though, cuz it's awsome!

Darker than black:
If you haven't seen this one, do so ASAP. Filled with plotting governments, scientists, secret organisations and emotionless people with weird powers that certainly weren't given to them for free, really laid back elevator music and a big freakin' wall in the middle of Tokyo, this series is... well, how do I put it? Even I feel cool after watching this.

All of the above are about 24 episodes long...

Yeah... hope this will help you... wish I also had some time to spare....

Fantastic Children seems interesting, I'll give it whirl. I've seen Serial Experiments Lain wink

I've heard a lot about Mushishi, I think it's about time I give it a try. I might try Ghost Hunt and Ergo Proxy later, I'll put it on a "to watch" list biggrin I don't know if I'll have time to finish all the series given, I only have a few days before I'm busy as heck bigrazz

Would love more recommendations! smile

Eden of the East / Higashi no Eden!!! Too bad it's so short! >< I'm still on a high from it... and I finished this daaaaaaaaaays ago.

A little longer than 26 episodes, but I enjoyed Death Note (but why do I have a feeling you watched this already?)

Maybe Noir?

House of Five Leaves was pretty interesting to me... only... it's not a thick plot... it's more about learning about each character's past... pretty neat.
