As in, if I wish to get started on this series, should I choose the manga or the anime? Is there an appreciable difference in plot? Art? Overall quality?
Thanks!

At the beginning, it's very similar... probably the same (it's been awhile; so, can't say for sure.) I don't know what the ending of the manga is, because I do not care enough to find out. However, if the ending of the manga is the same as the anime, pass up both. Other than that... just don't watch the anime... it was disappointing.

Thanks... Care to elaborate on what was disappointing? I don't mind being spoiled about the ending (just in spoiler-quotes so that others don't have to be!).

The true criminal
Beside that, the ending has no resolution in my opinion.

the Meijin, Makoto Hani- he obviously went to jail.

It's been over 2 years... so, I'll be fuzzy on the details...
Otherwise, it was just lame ending.
To me, it seemed like another inane shounen series... not a Seinen.
And a half-assed thriller story at that.

All I remember is that her mentor, the blond/white haired dude, is the murderer, and he only did it to have someone he could compete against; since, the trauma of the event would scar her for life... making her strive to meet her parents' murderer. As for what else might have disappointed me... I believe the actual story/acting/portrayal of the whole ending was subpar.

Advice: don't look under the spoiler tags if you're ever going to watch the series, because the main mystery was spoiled underneath both tags.
It's actually a rather interesting series, if you don't mind a rather slowly-developing plot. The characters are all quite interesting. The plot, however, focuses around shougi, so a lot of the time is spent in front of shougi boards. I would say the series is more a slice of life than it is a thriller. It all moves along at its own unique pace.
I've only seen the anime, and although it's probably not something you'll treasure and remember forever, it's definitely worth passing your time with, especially because the main character is not your usual type of female lead: because she's unable to speak, there's no dramatic whining.

No shit. That's what she asked for.
A thriller is basically any story where the antagonist sets up problems for the protagonist to overcome.
