Hi, I'm a HUGE fan of Survival, post apocalyptic, horror genres.
Could you please recommend me movies and tv series especially the underrated ones that follow the following criteria?
Survival triller in apocalyptic/disaster settings
Groups of people stuck in a deadly situation and trying to survive.
The Mist- people stuck in a supermarket, trying to survive against giant bug attacks.
The Happening...surprisingly, I quite like it. Except Zooey Deschanel's character and herself.
The Day after Tomorrow
The War of the worlds.
2012 would have been a good movie...but.
Armageddon.. Just.Meh.
Independence Day.. was...watchable.
The Day Earth stood still.
Cloverfield
2001: Space Odyssey ...awesome movie.
Tidal Wave- Korean movie
The Sinking of Japan- Love this movie.
V tv series
Persons Unknown tv-series
Land of the Lost- a comedy version of the survivalist movie genre.
Sunshine- Surviving in a spaceship, with a crazy intruder on board.
Jericho tv series
Children of Corn
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Stories about survival in a post apocalyptic world
The Time Machine.
Titan A.E
The Book of Eli
A Boy and his dog - classic movie.
I am Legend.
The Road
Rhona Mitra's character in Doomsday
Reign of Fire - Surviving in an apocalyptic world full of dragons. Poor CGI effects but the plot is good.
I hate Skyline though, mostly because the movie has unlikable characters.
Terminator series.
Planet of the Apes (looking forward to watching the new one)
Blast from the Past- lampshaded in a comedic kind of way.
9
Dsytopian post apocalyptic movies
Equilibrium
Æon Flux
V for Vendetta
Soylent Green
Children of Men
Day Breakers
Watchmen
Surrogates
A.I (Artificial intelligence)
Repo Men...interesting premise but I pretend the ending doesn't happen.
The Island- the only Michael Bay movie that I like.
I Robot
Play or Die
Battle Royale movie
Kaiji live action.
The Running man - Arnold is so badass in this movie.
Aliens- Actual contact with aliens. Not having war with them
District 13
Contact. BEST.MOVIE.EVER.
4400 tv series.
The Event tv series.
Good Zombie apocalypse movies
The Invasion- space virus infecting people into becoming emotionless zombies. Awesome stuff.
The Walking Dead tv series, love this.
Shaun of the Dead- Best zombie comedy ever.
28 days later and it's unworthy sequel, 28 weeks later.
Resident Evil - pretty obvious.
Dont recommend zombie movies about stupid characters killing off zombies for fun.
Imminent Death-
Deaths caused by war/other supernatural..end of world..conspiracies or maybe it's a story about a character who lived through time.
The Fountain - one of my fav movies.
Bicentennial Man-
Knowing
Alive live action
Ikigami live action
Flashforward tv series
Lost tv series
Good psychological 'slashers'- with plot.
The SAWs series.
Harper's Island Tv-series
Pandorum- Surviving in a spaceship full of crazies.
I dont watch a lot of slashers because of the cliche infested genres, I need recommendations on this. Especially if it has a supernatural or extraterrestrial elements in it.
For the sake of protecting my sanity, please refrain from recommending stupid slashers like Scream and stupid teenagers getting killed off by some random villian/ghosts/monsters...unless the story has actual plot or twists in it.
Thank you!

This belongs in the Chatter Box section, but I'm sure a mod will move it soon so here's some films anyway;

I intend to ask people for movie recommendations that could add to my movie list. The thread is where it's supposed to be.

I might skip Evil Dead..the special effects aren't convincing and it seems to give me the impression of a typical slashers movie with monsters in it.
I've already watched Tremors, it's quite good with the 'surprise' factor but the ending sucked. :S
When you mentioned The Thing, is it the 1982 movie or the new tv-series that will come out soon this year?
Event Horizon sounds interesting. The plot reminds me of Pandorum and Sunshine only that this is made in the mid-90s, I'll probably watch this.
Thanks for sharing!!

I've already watched Jumper, Knowing and Gamer.
Lost in space looks promising, I'm quite surprised to know Gary Oldman's in it.
Battlestar Galactica has been in my watch list for a while but I haven't watch it. I might pick it up someday.
Thanks for your recommendations.

Btw, people always mention the Firefly tv series, is it good?

I really liked the book The City of Ember. I haven't seen the movie, but if it's anywhere near as good you might like it.

the movie is good. its not really as close to the book as it should be, though.

Well it was done on a very small budget in the 80s, what do you expect? True, they're not very convincing nor up to the believable (if stale) CGI standards of today's horrors, but for stop-motion animation it's pretty creative and revolting.
It's not really a slasher either (more of a splatter), but I can't tell you why exactly as it would ruin some of the plot. Give it a chance, seriously!

Yeah it kinda fell a bit flat towards the end alright, 'let's go hopping on some stones yaayyy!".
I'm on about the original 1982 film. There is a prequel in the works alright, and from what I've read and seen it looks fantastic.

Forgot about Pandorum, need to check that out sometime now that you've reminded me...

Blade Runner
The Fifth Element
I'm not sure if those actually work since its not apocalyptic per se but they both have futuristic settings and kind of run down environments (mostly Blade Runner for that)....
Also there's District 9 ... there's aliens in South Africa (if I recall correctly and they are forced to live in a segregated area and not allowed to leave Earth. It has this documentary-ish feel to it ...
The Matrix and its sequels (which aren't as good in my opinion) .. it's also kind of futuristic I suppose ...
9 - It's an animated film ... and unfortunately only half-ways decent of a movie .. but it has that apocalypse feel because all that's left is these rag-doll things trying to help humanity .. I think
WALL-E Another animated film .... Humans are no longer on earth .... Robots are the main characters .. has a depressing undertone for the future of humans on earth (at least my opinion)
Well, that's all I've got. You may have seen some of them ... and maybe most of them aren't what you are looking for at all ... Wouldn't that be funny? Oh well, at least I tried
The Fifth Element

Thank you for taking the time to recommend these
I am completely oblivious of The fifth element..omg! Luc Besson's directed this?!!! This is interesting, thank you for recommending this. As for the others, I've already watched District 9, 9 and Wall E. Blade runner has been in my watch list for a long time, I will probably watch it someday

Yea..it was a lol-facepalm-lol moment. Sometimes, moviemakers think the audiences are stupid. x)
And be sure to watch Pandorum, it's quite good..I love the twists in it.
@ vampire ninja 896 and akari_mizunashi

I've already watched that
The movie's ok, I enjoyed watching the romantic sub-plot, drama and the survival scenes. I prefer the Japanese's version of The Sinking of Japan though..it focuses more on how psychological ordeals that people and the government have to face. Both are good movies, in their own ways.

Yup, I love it I actually saw the follow-up movie first, but after I watched the series I can't bear to watch the movie again because of a certain death. It's just a shame the show was cancelled. You can probably find it online or at a video rental store.
I also quite liked Blade Runner, mentioned above, and add my recommendation. The version I saw was the director's cut, which I'm given to understand means that they dropped the narration and I hear that improved the movie a lot.
I'm not sure how well this fits because it isn't apocalyptic or dystopian, but since I'm posting anyways Poseidon (2006) is quite enjoyable. Luxury line is flipped by rogue wave, most everyone dies early on and the movie follows the remaining survivors as they try and escape the sinking ship.

I third Battlestar Galactica - I was pleasantly surprised because i was expecting a straight up space drama, but it turned out to have a lot of survival elements in it.
I love Firefly too. Not a survival show, but still very fun. A western space opera that reminds me of trigun.
I <3'd Harper's Island! I wished they would keep making more TV shows with a similar format. Jericho was great too.
Persons Unknown - I'm not sure if this is classified as a survival TV series. Several people wake up in a deserted town and are unable to leave. They are subjected to cruel mind games as they try and make sense of what happened to them.
You've watched a lot of survival @_@ I've added a few of those movies on my list after reading your post xD
