Diverging for a second: When I first became aware I wasn't the only one with a "2d complex" in high school (a funny memory): As a class project small groups divided by gender each drew simple life sized sketches of a person on large sheets of paper... (girls draw a girl, boys draw a boy). One (girl) group had drawn an attractive girl (pretty voluptuous I remember) in a somewhat skimpy outfit. When the drawings were all being presented, one of the guys said out loud (sincerely) about the drawing, "hey she looks pretty hot" and I felt embarrassed for him immediately but was really suprised when in a surreal moment immediately after he said this .. all of the guys in the class verbally agreed.. the girls and the (female) teacher had confused faces... and questions: 'but, its just a drawing', 'how can you find a drawing hot?' (the girls giving off the impression that the guys were looking at the drawing like softcore porn). Confirming my theory at the time that a guy watching porn might be acceptable to a girl, but watching hentai they would probably think you were a freak... But after this, this event was a wedge for me to learn that others in the class did watch "cartoon porn"! *shock*

back to the question...why do you watch hentai?
as opposed to anime or regular movies? I'm a guy ...
as opposed to real porn? I can "use it" ... there is already a topic on this specific question but...

1- unique scenarios/fetishes/characters that aren't covered in regular porn, or in reality...
2- for fantasy... incredible voice acting -- I would love to watch an anime version of Koe de Oshigoto! for that alone ... if it ever got produced

3- realism & variety different from regular porn. I understand, in american porn, the actors exchange DETAILED lists of which sexual acts / fetishes of what things are/are not allowed (essentially a contract) limiting variety in fetishes. In terms of spontaneity hentai ironically wins, considering it could not be more deliberate. Regular american porn is for the most part boring, mostly relatively tame in terms of fetishes ... not as attractive as hentai in some cases maybe because there is so much of it done poorly and unprofessionally, but even professional work though is lacking most of the time...

4- the art techniques in hentai accentuate/idealize what you don't see in regular porn (similar to professionally produced porn that is professionally lit and shot) and make it some how more explicit (the HDR/HDTV of porn if that makes sense)?

In Genshiken the first reason is covered much from a broad perspective -- the 2d complex... fantasy more important than physical stimuli since it's the brain that's responsible for arousal ....

"its a guy thing" I think applies on this topic since I'd guess women are less predisposed to watching hentai maybe because of stereotypes that apply to regular porn: where guys have stacks of dirty mags under their beds, and that girls never masturbate so of course they would never look at nor need one. Also maybe it is possible for woman its harder to find/watch hentai matching their preferences in erotica & story... at least getting started out with (finding the right forums and sites is tough even for tedious even for nerds)

I think it is a matter of experience for people that don't watch it, and I don't think its a matter of gender (for some reason I even think girls would like hentai more than guys). You haven't tried it or have not yet stumbled upon "useful" hentai material. I think people stumble across hentai for the first time, not knowing what to look for, come across rape or bdsm (or tentacles!) and it becomes stereotypes for "hentai" and so they don't watch it and dismiss it... For that matter "anime" gets put in with this category as well ... and ecchi anime helping blur the lines further...

Take the robot chicken parody of sailor moon's queen Beryl... She get's a woody thinking of sailor moon....(futa or newhalf ... who knows,,,)... either way to the average person it just reinforces that anime is not just weird its HENTAI!

Why am I bumping all these Hentai threads... Anyways, no, I never watch Hentai. I do however read Hentai. Ehm, I read it because I like it? .__. There's no real life-inspiring reason behind it.

I lack an imagination.

Although hentai mangas have their own clichés, they are quite different from your common manga's.
This, I guest, is due to hentai mangakas being unrestricted in expressing their imagination, by otherwise applicable social norms and restrictions towards anything sexual related.

Therefore, as I find amusing to read about any story which at least tries to tackle or bend some of these norms, hentai mangas are quite often my source of this kind of amusement.

yeah we are social creatures and all but for society to come up with wrappers for almost every action of it's members feels like a disservice.
